Default 1999 XK8 Lug Nut Question

My basically stock '99 coupe had chrome wheels when I first bought her, but they were rusted and I swapped them for a set of stock, un-chromed Revolver wheels (see photo.)
I am going to pull the rear wheels to clean the anti-lock wheel sensors and check the wires for breaks (occasional ABS warning light) but have noticed that the lug nuts appear to have some sort of cap on them. The caps feel slightly loose but would not move when I used a wrench, lightly, on them. I can't find information on the forum that answers the question: what are these covers and should they be removed with a wrench or ?
The "covers" are non-magnetic. Are they plastic? Is there a special trick to removing them without breaking them?

stainless steel caps permanently attached to underlying lug nut.

use a very well fitting socket to avoid rounding them as that is a well known problem
for people who use the wrong socket. if you don't have one, buy one before starting
the job.

the wrench in the trunk is *not* a good choice.

Thanks plums. I read somewhere that a 19 mm socket should be used but I tried that size and no joy: it's too small. Since 19 mm is the largest socket I have, should I buy a 20 mm? Larger?

My '99 with chrome wheels and nuts requires a 22mm socket, 21 is too small.
Good luck!

After you carefully remove the lousy capped lug nuts, find a set of the appropriate solid lug nuts and replace them immediately. You do not want to ever be stranded with a flat tire because the lousy capped lug nuts crumple on you and make it difficult to remove and repair/replace your flat tire....

All three of our current vehicles (two Jaguars and a Dodge Ram pickup) came new with these lousy capped lug nuts. Not long after acquiring each vehicle, I located and purchased solid replacement lug nuts for each one and got rid of the lousy factory capped lug nuts. Make sure that you do the same....
