2000 XK8 Rear Speakers
I just purchased a 2000 XK8 Convertible and when I adjust the stereo fad control to full rear I only get the sub-woofer. I looked at a 2003 with the same problem. Is this how they are suppose to work or is something loose?
Thanks

Yes... the rears are just subwoofers... and fairly good ones - I updated my system with a Kenwood head unit and a JL Audio 600w (6-channel) amp and those rear subs can really put out the bass/boom.
Blindside,
Are these "rear" speakers the ones on the left/right side of the rear seat? Are they sometimes set up as full frequency rear speakers in premium sound convertibles from the factory?
I thought I read that the premium sound had 10 speakers (1998 converible). So I counted: Super tweeters x 2, dash x 2, front door x 2, rear x 2 and sub x 2?
The previous owner replaced the rear speakers I mentioned with full range speakers, but I still have very good bass - as though there is an open baffle sub in there somewhere. I always wondered if the subs were then behind the rear seat or something, but never have taken her apart to see. I do get full frequency sound from the rear speakers mentioned so I assumed it was designed that way because the sub speakers must be fed by a low pass filter (in the amp as I recall) and the previous owner would not have changed something as complicated as the low pass filter back when he changed the speakers.
Just wanted to see what you think.

It is my understanding that there are 8 speakers in the premium stereo convertibles (with six total "channels" - three left and three right). The dash and door triangle speakers are in parallel and constitute two of the channels (one right and one left), the lower door speakers constitute two more channels (right and left) and the rear speakers constitute the last two left and right channels.
As far as I know, in the premium CONVERTIBLES, those rear speakers are subwoofers only (unless replaced as in your car). I set the two rear channels in my car (new head unit and new amp but stock speakers) to subwoofers in the amp and they do THUMP pretty hard when I play something geared for a sub (like Diplo, for instance)... no doubt you have good bass, but you may not have the subwoofer thump with those full range speakers (and it may not matter to you anyways).

If you elect to replace them this procedure will help

Not sure about the MY2000 Alpine Premium system, but my earlier Harmon Karden system has TWO speakers in each of the enclosures beside the rear seats - a sub-woofer and a mid-range unit. They are fed by separate wires from the amplifier and are not on a passive crossover within the enclosure.
So :
2 x tweeter (by door mirrors)
2 x Squawker (Jag's word not mine) on fascia (in parallel with tweeters)
2 x Mid-bass in doors
2 x Rear mid-range
2 x Rear sub-woofer (only 1 in coupe ?)
That's a 1997 Harmon Karden Premium system. I'm pretty sure that when the Alpine system was introduced, the speaker enclosures were "discarded" and replaced by a flat panel, so maybe they replaced two speakers with one at the same time ?
Picture shows mine after replacing originals with new drivers. Smaller speaker grille can be seen above larger bass unit.

Cheers,
David.
