2000 XK8 - Strange droning/humming sound?
Hi there...
I strarted my car in a car park today and after about 10 seconds a really strange humming/droning sound started up. It could be 'felt' on the passenger side of the car as a vibrating too.
No odd warning signs, all gauges fine, no warning codes.
I opened the window and it was pretty loud outside.
I drove the car gently home but after around 2 minutes, the droning faded away.
The car drove perfectly all the time.
It almost sounded like the fan was out of balance or something.
Air con was off, cd/radio was off.
The car had a Jaguar replacement engine around 35,000 miles ago.
Anyone had this before?
Any ideas?
It's a bit worrying as I've never had it before in the 14 months I've owned the car.
Roy.

From what you've described, I'd look at your radiator fans. One of yours may have a bearing going bad, causing a wobble (not a technical term!). I've had this on other small electric motors, but not on a fan, but the situation is similar. Once started, they can go away by themselves, but will always come back. Check your fans by checking for movement of the shaft in the housing/bearing. If you hear it again, look at the fan assembly when it is running, see if you can visibly see any vibration. Needless to say, don't touch the blades!
