2001 xk8 ABS system
The ABS light comes on intermittenly. I took it to the Jaguar dealership and they said I need a right front wheel speed sensor and I could continue to drive it. I took it to a certified Jag mechanic and he says I need to replace the ABS module. What do you think?
Could be either one, but I figure the Jag dealer knows the cars a bit more intimately, and maybe can interpret the diagnostic codes better due to experience. i'd do a wheel speed sensor before I'd buy a new ABS module, but that's just me.
That sounds right, however in my experience it is normally the wheel speed sensor harness no the sensor. Make sure that if they do the sensor and the light comes back on, they will do the harness at no charge.
I read your reply H20 Boy on another post recommending purchasing 2002 model xk and up. I have a 2001 and wonder what you think about that year. I bought it in South Carolina a year ago with 12,500 miles. I wish I'd found this forum prior to purchasing it.

Not being a certified tech, only an owner. The 2003 model is where the 4.2L engine replaced the 4.0L, and it's a workhorse, very little trouble with it. The tranny on the 2003 is also the then-new ZF unit, which again, was an improvement over the previous one. I think there was a Benz tranny (also excellent quality!) before that in the interim, or maybe 1-2 years of use, but not sure about that, perhaps a tech can clarify. A 2001 will certainly have less trouble than the first couple years out, and you shouldn't worry yourself over it. The Nikasil issue on yours, being as low mileage as you say, was most likely never affected by the high sulphur gasoline, so as long as you keep feeding it the gucci gas, you'll be fine.
by all means, don't regret your purchase...maybe the 2003 and up years have more HP, but the rest are minor improvements, like HID headlamps and such.

I spoke to my mechanic who's jag certified and he admitted when I asked about a code that he doesn't have the tool to read a code for the ABS system and he checks the sensors through pressure and some other methods. With that, he says it's not the sensors but the ABS module. He recommends a rebuiltABS modulefor $1000.00 which includes a 3 year warranty. What do you think?
I have another question. If I purchase an extended warranty they will do an inspectionWill the problem with the sensor appear if the ABS light on the dash is not illuminated? You guys are great.

Yes MA, if there has been a code 'thrown' by the wheel sensor, it will be stored in the car and will show up on a code reader until it is manually cleared, even if currently the ABS light is not on. My AutoEnginuity scanner reads the ABS codes, and after my DSC lit up while driving along at highway speeds, I found the code next time I scanned it. I believe one of my wheel sensors is going on me as well, it just isn't a frequent problem as of yet. Since I cleared all my stinking codes already (w/o letting my jag service guy see them), it hasn't reappeared. I recommend you let the Jag dealer diagnose that one for you first before you spend $1k on a module, and then find out the wheel sensor is still at fault. One good thing about these cars, the codes can be, in this instance very tell-tale of the exact cause. This is my opinion though.
