Should I purchase a warrentee for a 2001 XK8
Should I purchase a warentee for a 2001 XK8 with 30,200 miles? It costs $1800 for 4 years coverage and it can be transferred to the next owner.
Anyone who reads this email is welcome to tell me weather or not they have a warentee on their Jag and if they feel a warentee for a 2001 XK8 with 30,200 miles is necessary.
Thanks for taking the time!

I have a 2001 xk8 and I'm asking myself the same question about purchasing an extended warranty. Are you considering the Listed Components Extended Warranty or Exclusionary Coverage Warranty. I think exclusionary is more comprehensive and more expensive, but I think I prefer it due to the coverage it offers. What do you think? I'm going to post a question about warranties too and maybe we'll get some more info that way too.

Most definitely...
Definitely get a warranty. While the quality on the XK's are pretty good, if it ever does need a repair it will be expensive. And take it from someone who has had to rplace an engine due to the Nikasil crap, you will wish you had a good one.
Mine is through Mecury, and I have not deductible and no limit through 6 years or 100K miles.

RE: Most definitely...
I live in Canada.. (Niagara) and recently bought a 2001 XKR with 30 K (km's). It was a private sale. The warranty expires in May or June of this year at Budds. I've only driven it for 500 kms before parking it for the winter but I knew the previous owner and know there are no issues with the car. Still, I am a little nervous about any repairs that may be required and like the idea of an extended warranty. Can anyone here tell me where I can purchase an extended warranty in my area? Thanks for any replies.

Jag USA offers the Extra Mile extended warranty (after the select warranty expires) for about the same price as what you can pay for the Select initially. All you have to do is get to a dealer within 1 month, and 1000 miles before the warranty expires.
If it is the same in Canada as here, I would definately do that over another brand of warranty, even if it is a few hundred canadian dollars more.

My Warranty...
Sorry for the late reply...my warranty is through Mercury Automotive. I bought it through the credit union that financed my XKR. It was about $4K, but covers almost everything - except wear items naturally, and trim items. They do not cover the Nav system, but do cover my stereo system. I have the highest coverage policy they issue. I have used it twice, once to fix the AC and another time to fix a strut. I think I have the Platinum Coverage through Mercury Automotive. They're probably online, although I don't know if they have coverage in Canada.
I have a Jag certitifed tech that is a crack ace on Jags and owns his own shop that does all of my work for me. I drive the thing in and he fixes it and I come and get it - no deductible or whatever.
I had to replace the engine in my wife's 1998 XJ8 Vanden Plas in 2002. We bought the car used in 1999 with about 32K miles on it. at 54K miles, one of the timing chains broke and caused No. 8 piston to break the valve head off of one of the exhaust valves and drive the stem of the valve into the side of the cyllinder wall. I had not bought a new warranty at that point. That gouged the cyllinder wall which is lined with Nikasil (or however it is spelled) and since the cyllinder walls are not lined but coated with that crap I could not have the cyllinder wall repaired and I had to replace the ENTIRE engine. Technically the car was 4K miles out of warranty. But Jag knew the timing chains were a manufacturing defect waiting to happen, and the Manager over the service dept at the Jag dealership where I had been taking the car changed OVERNIGHT from a "nice guy" when it was under warranty to an a$$hole, blaming me for EVERYTHYING. We had been bringing the car to them for years, and then they blamed me. It was all to save money for the dealership. I tried going through the Jag regional rep, but appently he and the old fart at Hennessey Jaguar in Atlanta were old friends. I think that service manager is gone now. I have been warning people to stay way from that dealership ever since. I don't blame Jaguar as a company completely for what happened to me, but the Jag reps in the US did in fact screw a whole lot of good customers with all of what was a known issue with the timing chains and the cylinder coating issues. I think most of it happened because of the way American business will try and screw a customer first before doing what is right and good business, all to save a buck rather than take care of, keep, and grow the alligence of a good customer.
Anyway, a warranty for these cars is really a good thing. Jaguar's quality has improved tremendously over the years. There is a reason why they had a bad reputation years ago, and they still fight that rep a little even today. But, Jaguar is not perfect. And while they make a good product today, it's like anything else mechaincal or electrical. You'll have problems from time to time.
