Default 2001 XKR starting problems (fuel pump)

Two weeks ago my XKR acted up on my way home from work. Near the end of my 1 hour ride home the car started to feel like it was lacking power. I got home but was unable to trouble shoot right away. An hour later I walked out to the car to access what I had felt.

I attempted to start the car, it started caught an idle at less than 500 rpm and shook violently, the car quickly stalled out. My first fear was I had jumped a tooth on the timing belt I did not have much trouble shooting time that night so I left the car be.

Two days later I went back out to the car and attempted to start it and work on it. It started and seemed to run well. I stopped and started it multiple times with no apparent problems. I drove the car around my neighborhood without issue. I brought it home and re-parked the car in the driveway. An hour later I decided I should of pulled the car into the garage. Upon attempting to re-start it once again caught idle around 500 rpm and violent ran and died. After that first catch, the car would no longer restart. It would turn over but not start. Unfortunately I was out of troubleshooting time this night also.

Over the next week I would get home and get a couple days of troubleshooting in. The car was predictable for that week. It would always start and run good after being left for a day or two. It would fail to restart sometime after reaching operating temperature. Even though the temp gauge showed good I assumed I might have an overheating issue.

I pulled and replaced the thermostat first. Old one was good and new one did not help. Next day I pulled the water pump, thinking I might of lost some of the impellers. Pulled my water pump and it was of the new design with white impellers. My water pump was fine. I was lost.

My big break came two days after working on the water pump. I came home ready to troubleshoot again. This time the car did not start after sitting for two days. I went back to basic, looking for air, fuel & spark. I quickly found my fuel rail was no longer getting fuel.

Using tips from the forums and JTIS I walked it back. Confirmed I had 12v to the fuel pump relays, 12v to the pumps themselves. Read the resistance on my two fuel pumps and found my primary pump was open.

I just finished replacing both fuel pumps today, and all seems back to normal.

******

I want to thank all the unknown people whose old threads and comments I searched through as I diagnosed my fuel pump issues. As my thank you back to the forums I did take pictures of my fuel pump changeout. So if anyone wants my little guide I put together for removing my tank & pump, just email me and I will gladly forward to anyone. Or if there is somewhere to post pdf like me let me know and I gladly will.

Thank you!!!!

Nice writeup, and now yours will be searchable, and hopefully will help someone else in the future. Thanks for taking the time to document your symptoms and troubleshooting details down!

Any way you can post the pictures up here? a free photobucket account perhaps?
