Default 2001 XKR Transmission Fluid Change

Hi all,
I am planning on changing the fluid in my 60k mile 2001 XKR Coupe. The car shifts ok while driving normally, but really jerks downshifting / upshifting when you press the pedal down. I’m going to try changing the fluid but I can’t find a direct video / step-by-step of how to properly do it. This is the Mercedes gearbox- all I can find is the XK8 tranny videos which is completely different.

How much fluid is needed? I have read to put the same amount in that you drain out, but how do you tell if it is low to begin with?

Is there a dipstick that will give a proper reading?

When you remove the bolt and drain the fluid, where do you refill back into the transmission?

What gaskets / solenoids should I replace when I have the pan off? I’ve been doing a lot of preventative maintenance and more information on bullet-proofing/ improving the transmission would be great!

What filter is recommended…and how do you take it off 😂? What is the best fluid (price not much of a deal)?

Any help or input is much appreciated! Thank you!

Plenty of info on this topic, just do a forum search of 722.6 transmission.

yes you need a dipstick. Pelicanparts .com has them, as well as other misc. 722.6 parts.. it is tricky to get the dipstick all the way down. It takes some twisting and turning it while pushing down.. the fluid level must be checked with the transmission at certain temperature. Those are marked on the dipstick.

you must use a fluid that is Mercedes approved. The list is here also.

Be advised the Mercedes transmissionis very particular about the type of ATF used . A forum search will show many topics on this subject.

any of these four fluids are Mercedes approved. I’ve use the Fuchs 4134 and the Shell 134. Both have worked perfectly.

don’t be tempted to use a substitute. I tried using a different fluid and it was a disaster resulting in poor shifting.

Mercedes-Benz Automatik-Getriebeöl Blatt 236.14 Daimler AG

Fuchs TITAN ATF 4134

Fuchs TITAN EG ATF 134

Mobil ATF 134

Shell AFT 134

MB 236.14 sheet - ATF 134 or 4134, aka "new" 722.9 fluid (MB Part # 001-989-68-03-10)

Mercedes always recommends the latest fluid spec for the 722.6 transmission but there is nothing wrong to use the older fluids (your car came with the 236.10 fluid).

the most economical Mercedes approved ATF I’ve found is the Shell 134.

Checking the fluid level and topping it up is covered in the workshop manual - I've attached the relevant section. It's much easier to work on compared to the ZF fitted to the XK8.

The Mercedes 722.6 was used on many different cars, so you can find lots of resources on Youtube etc by searching by that name (or NAG1), rather than Jaguar.
