I just replaced the secondary tensioners on my 99 XJ8 so the process is not something I am unfamiliar with.
Having done that I will not remove and reinstall the valve covers without replacing the gasket so am reluctant to pull the one on my 2002 XKE, as they do cost a little.
Does anyone know from which VIN number Jag went with the 3rd generation tensioners on these.

Best is to check your engine number, so from 0108130000 the engine has the new metal bodied tensioners and the primary morse chain. The parts catalogue doesn't state any vin.

I too was in that same spot...did the same thing. I Had to explore each subforum before I found the FAQ that everyone was referring to.
