Smile 2002 XKR s/c Reach Motor/Cable Access

I have read all the forums/sticky on how to drop down the Steering column, but have run into a severe problem accessing what I believe to be 2 bolts/nuts that hold it up. I have attached pictures in hopes someone can provide some in depth knowledge. The 2 connection points are mostly covered by a metal bracket that will not allow you to get a torx wrench on them from the steering wheel side and the back side can be accessed with great difficulty. However, I would think that one needs to get to both sides in order to lossen/tighten them up in the process. Any thoughts?

Also, some threads differ as to removing the steering wheel air bag. Is it required? If so, what must I be careful with in order to not deploy or render it unusable? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Mike

No expert here. I was waiting for you to post the picture documented solution so I could do mine.

All the documentation I have read says to remove the top cover over the steering wheel shaft. That is supposed to allow access to the two Trox bolts. With that, the shaft is supposed to drop down and permit access to the motor/drive.

Be sure to disconnect the car battery before exploring inside the dash. Be sure to charge the batteries in your camera!

Test Point
It appears that that top bracket that covers te two bolts is riveted to some dash brackets. Is the air bag required to be removed? Since it sits inside the steering wheel and if someone gets the bolts out of the bracket would it not just slide down with the steering thereby not requiring removal?

No one has ever mentioned removing the air bag. This is the best discussion so far but it doesn't answer your questions . . . or mine.

Test Point, did motorcarman send you some instructions on how to do the set points? Could you email them to me. I think I am going to buy an economical video inspection scope and try and do it without dropping the column down since we seem to not get any answers here. I 'll let you know. Let's keep the thread going maybe someone with knowledge will chime in and help.
