Default 2003 4.2 XKR Gearbox (ZF6HP26) Adaptations.

Afternoon all,

I do apologise for not being here on this forum for quite a while, but Prostate Cancer came knocking on my door a while ago, so it's been a few 'importantly hectic' few months ..... Anyway, enough of that.

I've done a lot of searches but are unable to find what I'm looking for, regarding flash programming the TCM, after having the ZF gearbox completely stripped and re-built and the associated Drive Cycle adaptations after the re-flash.
What I've found is the following:

General conditions
A/C switched off and sports mode not selected.
Transmission oil temperature higher than 60 deg C.

Learning mode sequence (Supercharged XKR)
1) Light throttle up-shifts to 6th gear, up to 50 MPH, with all shifts occuring between 1000 & 1500 RPM.
2) Coast down, with light braking, to standstill.
3) Wait at standstill, in drive position, with the foot brake applied, for at least 15 seconds.
4) Repeat the same cycle / procedure at least 5 times.

My question and statement is, that here in the UK, it's almost impossible to find a quiet stretch of road, where the above 'learning mode sequence' can be performed.
Therefore, have things progressed, to where the TCM can be put into 'learning mode' electronically, via SDD or IDS, and not having to bother with the drive cycles?

With the gearbox being re-fitted back into my XKR within the next few weeks, I'll need to sort something out before then.

Many thanks in advance.
Tony

Just driving the car will enable it to adapt. It takes a bit longer so gear changes will not be optimal for a while but less than 100 miles.

Thank you for the quick reply, Richard. Greatly appreciated.
I didn't realise that the TCM would re-learn it's adaptations under normal driving conditions ...... Every day is a learning day.

Just drive it as you would normally (& try not to rag it) for about 150 to 180 mls, under town, A & B roads & motorways. Don't use Sport till you've finished the learning mileage so it learns where top gear is.

Once again, many thanks for the very helpful reply.
I have to say that I feel much more 'at ease' now, knowing that normal day-to-day driving will help it learn.

I was originally considering going out at 3am one morning, to find a nice straight and quiet piece of road, to perform the drive cycles on.
Sorted ..... Thank you

Not a bad idea to find a nice quiet road in the early morning anyway. It's great fun to blast down them at silly speeds.

I agree, but I if I was able to find such a road, here in the UK, I would still want to perform the TCM learning mode sequence first, then maybe go for a bit of a hoon afterwards, just to ensure that all had worked OK
