Default 2003 XK8 top hydraulics

My 2003 top used to go up and down but I always thought it was slow. Now it acts like it can hardly move the top to close it and I have to give it some help to get it closed enough to latch.
There is plenty of fluid in the reservoir and there are no leaks anywhere. The pump runs and sounds fine.
Anyone have any ideas as to what the most common problem is before I start throwing parts and money at it?
Thanks

Is the fluid up to the top embossed line on the tank? Also check the petcock closed on the tank. Question, what fluid was used to fill the tank?

Yes it is filled. Original fluid which is supposed to be better than in the earlier models. Petcock was closed. I opened it and then reclosed it. Tied the top and it went up and down fine for the first time in a year. I do not understand this at all.
Some of the braiding it deteriorating on the hoses at the pump area but no leakage or swelling of the hoses.
Is this braiding more decoration than function?
Thanks

If your hoses are flaking black-colored insulation fragments, they probably will not last much longer....

And where can I buy a complete hose set? SNG Barrett lists one for the top latch but not sure if that is the complete hose set or not

Quite a few folks here have ordered their hoses (and had their rams refurbished) from Top Hydraulics in Washington (the state, not D.C.).

Chris Porter in the UK also sells the hoses. Three years ago his were about half the cost that Top Hydraulics was charging, even with shipping to the US. The pandemic may have changed that business model. His website was www.cabriolet-roof-hoses.com.

you can also try Cabriolet Hydraulics out of Bradenton Fl - I used them to replace my hoses a few years back - prices comparable to tophydraulics and use uprated hoses as well
