Default 2004 XK8 Apollo Wheel Problem

Right front tire failed. Former owner had put 255/40's at all four wheels. Replaced front tires (245/40 Continental's) but am concerned about corrosion problem of chrome Apollo wheels. Can't afford to replace tires every year. Records show PO put 2 Pirella PZeros and 1 Mich. (all 255's) since 12/2014. The PZeros were 12/2016 & 1/2017.
Anyone have suggestionss on replacing the Apollo's(which I like) with aluminum wheels and if so , whose.

What do you mean by this? If it is worn out, check alignment (camber!), and ride height, which typically points to upper shock mount and lower shock bearing.

If you mean air leaks, chrome wheels are known to be problematic over time, especially where the tire meets the wheel. The chrome peel off, and it eventually leaks. AFAIK, remedies are temporary. It involved removing the tire off the wheel and clean that edge as best as possible, I am sure pro tire shops have better tricks.

I initially had that exact set, and I sold it locally after locating a set of Hydras from a forum member.

Fwiw, I just paid the local tire guys $26 to fix a leak on mine. The used a tool to fix corrosion from this same thing.

Thought u may be interested in price to fix, no promise how long it'll last of course.

I had the Apollo's and loved the look, best looking factory wheel IMHO, but the chrome pealed so bad I couldn't live with it any more. See here for my resolution...

Jandreu,

What did you do with your old chrome wheels? Is there a market for them?

One of the factory 19-inch front Atlas chrome wheels on my wife's 2006 XK8 Victory Edition has been pitting for a couple of years now. No air loss yet, but sooner or later I know it will begin. I have looked into re-chroming but that involves shipping the wheel across the country to California and she will be without the wheel for 5 to 6 weeks, not a viable option according to her. Man, I hate these drug-dealer chrome wheels....

Jon89, I still have them. As you said to repair hem they have to be shipped and living in Hawaii there's no used resale demand for them. If someone wants them they can have them, free, just pay shipping and packing charges. They still have tires mounted on them so that would be extra to have the tires removed and disposed of.

On a side note: I'm retiring the spring on 2019 and will be moving to coastal NC, if someone wants them and can wait I might find room in my shipping container for them.

Is there any difficulty in changing out my 19" Apollo wheels with , say, a set of 18" alloy ones?

Nope that's what I did. Now running 18 and ride is much smoother!

I have a 98 xk8, I am looking at buying 18" alloys... they are 5x120 et30 and all 4 are 8 inches wide. Do you think there will be any problems with fitment and what tires sizes are you guys running? I think recomended 18's are 245/45r18 & 255/45r18

Just wondering if this is similar to what you guys are running?

All the Jaguar standard combinations are listed on a sticker under the arm rest. Wheel size, tire size, etc. The only "complication" is that not all wheels fit on cars with the Brembo brakes.

Thank you. I am fortunate that I have standard brakes.
