2005 XK8 Gear Shift Knob
Hello all,
I have a question about replacing the gear shift knob that came with my XK8; the OEM one is a dull brown and doesn't look very nice with the burl trim. I've come across this leather/chrome OEM knob (Part # C2C34178LEG) that looks like the one on XKR's w/o the "R" badge. My issue is that I have inconclusive evidence on whether or not it will fit (seems to fit S-type for sure). Also, it looks like I may need an additional part that threads on below the shift knob. If anyone can help clarify I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

There is an unbelievable number of Gear Change Knobs (items 1 and 2) listed in the Parts Catalogue for the 4.2 Litre 2003/05 model but I can't find the P/N you quoted for an XK8/XKR.

That's the bad news. it gets better!
There's only two Gearshift Levers (item 9) listed and these are the same other than one is black and the other is chrome.
The Gear Change Knob is secured with a Cone (item 8). There's two different cones - one for Knobs without the 'R' logo and the other for Knobs with the 'R' logo.
Because there is only one design of Gear Lever, the internal thread on both of these Cones must be the same. The only difference is likely to be the external diameter to suit the base of the Gear Change Knob.
I've certainly learned a lot about Gear Change Knobs through looking all this up. I hope it helps you.

Graham,
Thanks for your reply! Your information on the cone was very helpful. I'm wondering if you'd be able to provide an image of all of the part numbers for the various gear change knobs so that I could find a suitable replacement from the list to go along with the correct cone. Thanks again for your insight!

Jaguar used the same M8 thread since the introduction of the XJ40 in 1987, so all the automatic gearbox knobs interchange. The main difference with the later knobs (2003+), apart from them being a different shape, is they have a wider base diameter to suit the chrome nut/collar underneath.
Cheers,
Cheers,
