Default 2001 Jaguar xk8 Engine Coolant Low Light

Hello, all. My Engine coolant low light has been on for over a year. I finally installed a new engine coolant low sensor in the coolant recovery tank, but the light is still on. Could it possibly be the coolant recovery tank cap that's bad, or will I have to replace the entire coolant recovery tank? It's the difference between $20 and $300. Does anyone have a similar situation?

This is a very common issue on these cars. It could be the cap, which is a cheap fix. However, it is more often the expansion tank itself. They love to develop cracks. Part is about $140 USD and can be changed in 30 minutes as a DIY project. I assume the $300 quote is for a mechanic to do the work. A bit on the high side, but not terribly so.

But before you do either fix, can you smell coolant? Are there any noticeable leaks? If yes, this can point you to other possible issues (e.g. bad hose). Also make sure coolant is filled to the bottom of the rim on the tank. Just a half inch low can set off the idiot light.

Tons of info on here regarding this problem, so do a thread search. But in the meantime, keep a VERY close eye on your coolant level. Overheating Jags tend to get expensive quick.

First give your coolant system a visual and identify any leaks and repair or replace any defective parts. Next do a pressure test on your coolant system. If all is good look and see if your recovery bottle is not broken, cracked or missing. You can find it in the right side wheel fender, this will require you to remove the tire and fender wheel liner just a few screws. If the tank is present and not cracked check the hose from the reservoir to the recovery bottle for a blockage in the pipe by using air pressure. If all is good add coolant to the recovery bottle and top off the reservoir and see what takes place. If this does not help you may need a new filler cap. The system is designed to allow for expansion and contraction that takes place when the engine goes from cold to hot and back.

You can get the expansion tank for 126usd off ebay. Even comes with a 1 year manufacturer warranty.
