Smile 2006 XK8 or 2007 XK which is better ?

I just joined because we are thinking about a Jaguar coupe for my Wife and I wanted to ask for some advice in my first post .If we do buy a Jag I plan to be an active participant and join the Jaguar club ( I am a active member of the Audi and Porsche car clubs of America). we have always loved Jags but our last ownership was in 1975 a 1963 XKE coupe - what a beautiful car - but I was just out of college and we needed something practical I hate to admit this on a public forum but I sold the car for $3K and bought a FIAT 131 coupe for $3500 new to repalce the Jaguar OUCH !!

We lived in Fredericksburg VA in the late 1970's and the Jaguar club met at the British Embassy in Washington DC - in the pub room - with all the English beer and pub food you wanted ! A FANTASTIC place - one night I met Bob Tullis ( Group 44 !) there in 1977 - he was driving a XJS and had a beautiful woman on his arm he was a very nice guy !

I guess I have given away my age I am 58 and my wife is 56 so we thought that its now or never for another Jag !!
I drive a 2006 911 coupe ( after BMW's for 25 years and Fiats MG's and the Jag before that) and we have a LR3 Land Rover for winter driving

Any advice would be greatly appreciated ! THANK YOU !

Welcome to the forum!
Your question is a bit like asking which is better, an apple or an orange?
Those are two very different cars. I believe that they use the same drivetrain and little else. I prefer the style of the older model, and they're certainly a better value at the moment.

I also think that the older (X100) body style looks better than the new (X150) body style. That said, by 2006, pretty much all of the bugs had been fixed on the old style XKs. 2007 was the first year for the X150 model and, I have heard, introduced a number of new bugs. Unless you really like the looks of the new style XK, I'd recommend getting the 2006. You'll save money and likely end up with a more reliable car.

In my opinion, you should go for 2006 XK8. It is pretty and much better in performance. It is equipped with the numerous safety features as well as extra acessories like rain-sensing wipers. Also it has adaptive restraint technology system includes side-impact airbags with head-protection extensions mounted in the front-seat backrest cushions, traction control, dynamic stability control.

You might find we're just a little biased here..............and don't be surprised to get a different answer on the XK/XKR 2006 Onwards section.

Both fine vehicles but from a couple of previous bad experiences, I'd avoid the introduction Model Year of any vehicle. Either go late XK8/XKR or jump to a 2008 XK.

Thumbs up Thank you !!

Thank you for the great advice I agree 100% !

A 2006 coupe it will be !!

My only wish is that a manual transmission was available in US cars but I am sure my wife will like the automatic

Now the hunt starts to find a nice one !

All BEST !!

Good morning, Russ.

As Graham pointed out, consider where you posted (bias is possible). But, as I used to tell people about my granddaughter and how sweet she was - Yes, I was biased, but I was also right!
I certainly prefer the looks of the older model.

About your selling the Jag and getting the Fiat - remember that on the other side of that, someone is probably still telling how he got a great deal on an older Jag when he had been considering a new Fiat for more money. He saved money and got a slice of a wonderful life. You've probably infused joy into generations of a family.

In 1967 my dad traded a Mercedes 190D, on which he had spent a total of 25 cents in maintenance (new brushes for the starter), for a new VW square back. He loved the MB, but didn't know he could refinance it. Having a recently minted masters degree...

Welcome to a fabulous forum and welcome back to the wonderful world of beautiful cars.

Good choice Russ.
I'll take the blame for the location of the post, it was in the forum help section originally, so the dilema was where to move it to, looks like I picked the right one.

Russ,
I had a 63 roadster and had to sell it for family reasons as well. Got a 68 T-bird with suicide doors. Must have been around 1970-71. I was living in North Versailles, PA at the time.

Russ,

Your story and age is almost identical to mine. I own a 2006 XKR and it has been trouble free since I bought it two years ago. I'm of the opinion that the 05-06 models had most of the kinks worked out except for the roof hydraulics on the verts. I do like the X150 body style and if I could own both styles I probably would. Truthfully, I only put around 3000 miles per year on the car since I use it for pleasure driving in the mountains and the occasional trip. Good Luck anf enjoy---by the way for what it's worth I do enjoy the extra power on the R.

Thanks guys you answered my last question which XK8's are the least trouble free . I know now to look for a 06 or 05

We have the 911 for performance so I might just look for a base 8 but if I see a deal on a R I will go for it - never too much horsepower !!

Also the T bird is a beautiful car nice cruiser I had a friend in High School with a 64 that car was incredible - what an interior it was all chrome !!

All Best !!

Russ
