And today it all ends. My car will not "stick" or engage in park. It will park but the shifter has room for it to go forward. I can take the key out and the alerts stop after 30 seconds. Is it possible that I have something stuck inside the J-gate? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

can you move through all of the gears? Is the light illuminated on each notch you place it in?

It takes just 5 minutes to remove the trim and wood, and then you can disassemble the jgate and explore further. Make sure the pivot bracket isn't broken (no. 11). I think people break these things when forcing the car out of park ... like when parked on an incline. Don't mess with any cables just yet though, unless you want to check the bolts are tight on the rotary switch directly mounted to the side of the tranny, its where the cable from the j-gate manipulates the transmission.

 

Update:
I just got back from lunch; when I put the car in park it "popped" into place. I will follow your instructions to explore what was in the way. Are there tell-tale signs of wear and tear I should be looking for?
