Default Transmission failure??

I was taking it easy and all the sudden jumps out of drive and info state transmission failure. No forward gears. Only reverse. So I reversed to a near by shop. We searched for transmission dip stick. We did not find. After alittle while I tried it again. Worked perfectly. No service engine light ever. It's electrical I think. It's parked now until I get answers. 100 k and shifts great when working.

Sorry-can't help. I'm somewhat familiar with the ZF 6hp26 used with the 4.2 engine, but you have a different tranny. In the case of the 6hp26, most Jaguar transmission issues have nothing to do with the actual transmission (other than low fluid or a fluid change). Other issues could be caused by the MAF, transmission module, or needing a dealer transmission reflash / reprogram. These items may or may not apply to your XK.

You have the ZF 5HP24 transmission. There is a motherload of info in the FAQ sticky (3rd thread in the XK8/XKR section). Look it over then come back if you have questions.

Default Good Idea or Bad Idea

I made an appouintment with a pretty good transmission place wednsday morning. He says that there is a circuit board that may be bad in transmission and he could tell pretty quik with a check. He stated that the jumping out of drive will happen more often as time goes by. I have parked the car and plan on trailering it even though it shifts now and its back to normal.. Could dirty oil or low fluid do this (jump out of Drive or forward. I works great now. Seems like low fluid or dirty fluid it would slip or slow to shift but not all the sudden out of no where just shift out of gear. I hope to God its not a transmission rebuild. Does my guy make sense?

I started getting transmission fault warnings about 3 weeks ago and at first did not notice any problems. After restarting faults disappeared. Faults reappeared more frequently and would leave the car in 5th gear, would not downshift. As soon as I restarted ignition, trans shifted perfectly. Had the tranny opened up, gears are fine, fluid valve and wiring harness were bad. Harness is back ordered, replaced valve. Drove it for an hour and with any more than slight acceleration, fault returns after shift from first to second (hard shift followed immediately by fault code). Parked it 2 days ago and will wait for harness to arrive, hopefully tomorrow. We'll see if that fixes the problem.

Also, took it out of sport mode to avoid first gear start, and it seems to have helped at least temporarily.

Could dirty oil or low fluid do this (jump out of Drive or forward. I works great now. No slipege noise or bad shifts. The only thing different was the outside temperture was the hottest this year at 92. Seems like low fluid or dirty fluid it would slip or slow to shift but not all the sudden out of no where just shift out of gear. I hope to God its not a transmission rebuild. Does my guy make sense? Can non Jaguars transmission labs reflash jags. I love the car but I hope this don't end my love relationship. I've owned many Mercedes and found the are built to last. I hope Jags are the same.

Default Fluid Clean Full No Codes left

I have a mysterious problem. Driving one day lost all forward gears and had solid reverse. Drove backward to shop. Turned off 5 min and back to normal. Transmission shop found no codes and said everything looked great. I did get a messenage at the time that stated "Trannsmision failure". Something electrical? No codes? Works great now? Any suggestions b4 I take my cross country vacation with my wife? One thing I noticed when I first got car was some egg head spilled a drink into gear shift area. Took some time to clean it. Maybe a connection in gear shift area. Help

I would look at the rotary switch on the side of the tranny and the wiring harness and connectors from the tranny to the tranny control module. Low fluid would leave no reverse either. There are lots of things it could be but goign from not working to working fine poijts to electrical connections or a failing rotary switch.

Not every fault in a vehicle sets a code just as not every code accurately describes an actual fault.

Your Jag did not come with a DipStick. Go to Eurotoyz.com and buy yourself a dipstick or ZF..14yo tranny fluid isa very bad thing.
