does not stay clipped shut. Something broke or missing? The little latch thing you push on appears in one pc but the place where it would latch on the holder part looks like it is missing something.
For a expensive car like this I have a handfull of BS plastic pc's here and there that are broke, cracked, etc.

 

The UK version of the XK8 did not have a cup holder. The one that they put in the US version just screams 'you want a stinking cup holder, here is a stinking cup holder'.

It does not work for its intended purpose, you go round a bend and anything taller than a soda can will slide out.

I was thinking about modifying the center console to remove the insert and machine two deep cup holder inserts from aluminum plate stock. If I could work out the wiring for the now obsolete cell phone I could put a bluetooth module in there and a satnav as well.

Well I can see you are not lost for words! Like you said they do not work. I saw two modifications that had promise. One that was relocated to the side of the console. It appeared to be in the way of the seat moving forward or your leg. The second was to remanufacture the existing cup holder with a wood product. With this it does not close and hide. However, if matched with the wood in the car it could look nice if done correctly.

Sorry to correct you Phill but the UK did get cup holders , mines got them , as has a lot of XKEC members cars , build quality not great BUT a repair kit is available from Jaguar for about £12 ,
