Default 97 XK8 Ignition Key

I had read previously that the early XK8 key did not have a programmable chip, and today it was confirmed when I bought a new key from the dealer for $50. Finally I found something inexpensive for my car.

But now the question is, does the new key start the car? I know that most of the XK8s require programming to the key so the key and car match.

After I wrote that I realized someone would ask. The parts guy assured me programming was not required. In fact there is no chip in the key, they just take one out of the bin and cut it. I was so confident that I didn't even take my car there. The key sticks a little when I pull it out, but starts the car.

Put a small amount of key lock graphite powder on your new key. That should greatly improve if not completely solve your key-sticking problem....

Man, I love those low-tech, non-programmable keys. My 1999 Dodge Ram is the last of that breed in our household. No remote, no circuit boards, no batteries, and no problems!
