Default 97 xk8....love/hate relationship

Hi all! I'm a new member to the forum, but i frequent it often! This site has excellent information. Well I'm having a but of trouble, and it seems to be electrical. At the very beginning of my troubles the car cut off out of the blue and says engine fault on the dash and would not restart. I take it to my mechanic and he does a code scan a few days later and no codes are present. It cranks with no issue. I drive it all day with no issue and then ask of a sudden it cuts off again. The codes initially were saying one entire bank was not firing, and the circuit controlling the bank was not working. I replaced the battery because it was very old, then the codes changed to p1229,p1242 and 1797. I cleaned all connectors and i only had the code p1000. After driving to dc for the weekend and around the va area for a week the problem comes back and it was just the 1797 then switched to 1638...it all basically said CAN bus ecm. If i do a hard reset car cranks and runs normal after i wait a few minutes. Any help please?

I have had a similar problem for a few months. In my case the cruise control does not work, but no codes. I visited a local indy who ran the IDS software and he claims there was no communication with the TCM.
I suspect the problem is in the ECM, and it is unable to access the CANbus for some information. I might send the ECM to ECUdoctors.com to see if they can find a fault.

I almost forgot an important piece of information! I have an abs light on and stability control failure message and momentarily low brake fluid messages and parking brake messages. i have read many forums that says the abs module can interrupt and cause an engine fault by for the lack of a better term "shorting"out the ecm. So this morning i ran the car and it ran very rough and it cut off on me,j came back and changed fuses, relays and still ran very rough! I unplugged the abs module to take it out of the picture and the car runs great now. Maybe you should try that! I'm hopping that it continues to work and this was the cause of my electrical problems. I will have the abs pump/module repaired.

Though a little unlikely, the ECM may be faulty. Often, the 'highway driving' shutdown can be attributed to the throttle body and/or its TPS. My first recommendation would be to inspect and clean the TB connectors with electronics cleaner and make sure it is well sealed (moisture wreaks havoc on that connector while driving)
