EDIT: This is the 1997 XK8 Convertible not coup. Important detail there! Sorry about forgetting this. /EDIT
Now that the major items are fixed, and the car drives (knock on wood) reliably with every turn of the key and shift of the J-gate, I am on to the nice-to-have's, and a rattling / gurgling / lifeless factory woofer simply won't do!
I have removed the driver's rear woofer, which I have learned is 6.5", 3.5" depth, 3.5" diameter magnet. Dimensions on Amazon are pretty spotty, and the local stores do not seem to have proper subwoofers on hand for comparison.
Has anyone done this replacement recently, and can recommend any good fits that are likely still on the market?
Cheers!

After searching a bit, and reading some fairly old posts, I am going to try the Kicker DSC650 Coaxial 4-ohm units.. I'll be sure to follow up with my experience
Since all of my home equipment has had 40th birthdays, by necessity I have learned this method also. Although I will continue to look for some old small Advents as I believe the woofer could be adapted to work. Or even the Infinity Pos 1. Both 4 ohms
I never knew such existed ~ I have ordered a pair of 6.5's and look forward to refurbishing these factory speakers.
If anyone else reads this thread, don't buy the speakers I tried. They do fit the wells perfectly, but are too weak and start buzzing when you've got the stereo up anywhere near audible with the top down.
Finished fitting the repaired factory sub's and I have amazing sound. This is definitely the way to go. However, it takes quite a delicate touch to get the glue to seal well whilst keeping the cone centered - I had to redo one of them twice to finally keep it from rubbing.
They're not pretty, but they definitely give the kind of factory sound the car wants to produce:
