Default 98 XK8 engine into 97 XK8 ??

I need a new engine for my 97 XK8 and a fellow locally has a very low miles 98 XK8 motor and trans. These are both AJ26's right, so can the 98 long block work in my 97??

It looks identical....

I believe so, the AJ26 changed to AJ27 in the middle of 1999 model.

Nothing stopping you fitting a 4.2 from a 2005 if you really wanted to, they are all interchangeable through the range, just the newer you go the more you have to swap from you original engine

Default New engine

Thanks for the info- just asking about this 98 eng into a 97. Don't have access to any 4.2

The local wrecker told me the 98 eng wouldn't work in a 97, but I had a feeling he's wrong. What I'm looking to confirm is that this is a (generally) plug and play install- no wiring changes, no computer changes etc.,.

Straight swap if they are both XK8 AJ26's ,
just make sure or the usual has been done to the replacement
ie Tensioners and chains , thermostat , water pump etc

Hope this helps ,

Nik
