98 xk8 shock assessment
Hi, can anyone assist with a standardized parts list for changing front / rear shocks...ie: ( Bilsteinn B4 shocks bushings, mounts etc ) like how many & which items are needed before doing the job....also any links to recommendations of parts shops....thanks
Hi, thanks for responding...I'm in Hawaii, so we have the basic auto parts stores like NAPA, O'Reilly, Checkers etc....as well as ebay & Amazon for parts access....I'm mostly wondering what bushings, mounting plates etc are recommended to have / change along with the Bilstein B4 shocks....looking to do both front & rear...reason being is that there's a significant bottoming out clunk when going over speed bumps, pot holes etc from both front & rear....Mahalo from Hawaii
First you need to measure from wheel centre to the edge of the fender ..should be 16.5 in . If its down to 14.5 ish then you might need new springs and top mounts . this applies to front and rear . The only way is to have a look at the top mount..front is simpler . Pull the cap off at the centre of the top front shock mount (under the hood) and look in at the condition of the rubber. Take the wheel off and look up with a torch at the top mount ..should be about 5/8 of yellow rubber stuff.
How many miles has it done ?
fill in your details and in your signature put what car it is Coup/conv and year .
have a look at this . And there are others if you scroll down.

Clunking noises from the front are typically due to worn/collapsed anti-sway bar bushings. There are cheap Uro replacements available. The bolts to the U clamps are a bit tricky to work out but nothing out of the ordinary. From memory, nothing else needs to come off. Some replace the end links as well but they seem much more durable.
Best of luck, keep us posted.
