Default 98 XK8 tensioners

Hi all I have recently purchased a one owner 98 xk8 with 59000 kilos but with no original handbook or history although the mileage has been AA verified On booking it in to an independent workshop for new tensioners and water pump I was asked what kilowatts the motors output is,on questioning I was advised there were two versions produced.I have been reading the forum and have seen no mention of this and I was not aware of the relevance.I am now having doubts as to whether I am being led on in my ignorance. Mark. 1963 3.8 E Type. 1998 XK8 Coupe Vin # SAJJGKED3ARO13538

Either smile and walk away or find another clown. Tell them 4 Amps and not the 4.2 Amps.

I don't recognize the use of the term watts in this application. They sold 4 liter engines in 1998, one normally asperated, one supercharged.

Wayne seemed to understand your question, maybe I'm just tired. Let us know if you need more help.

He may be referring to the XK8 and the XKR.

The '98 XK8 was rated at 290 hp.

The XKR of the same year at 370 hp

That converts into kilowatts as: 216 Kw and 276 Kw

Thanks for the replies I mentioned that both xk8 and xkr were available and that mine was xk8 but he seemed to not register. I shall try another workshop Thanks again Mark

There is a VIN Decoder tool on this forum. Somehow, the VIN listed in your post fails to validate. Maybe if you passed the same VIN to your mechanic, he was unable to start his research as he was unable to identify the exact engine code (Original AJ26 vs. AJ27 with VVT). Not to say that the tensioners would be different either way. Just a thought.

liv, you might re-check your VIN as you have a capital 'O' which I think should be a zero and might be throwing your tech - although he should know what a 98 XK8 engine is rated at in cc, HP, kW and amps . My VIN is similar to yours: SAJJGAED3AR020869; sadly most of the online decoders don't work with non-US cars.

Any dealer should be able to let you have sight of the non owner-specific service history from the VIN, and some won't charge you.
