Default 99 XK8 No Dash, No Start

Hi everyone! My name's Art and I just bought this convertible beauty in August with only 57,000 miles on her.

Suddenly though, she seems to have had a stroke. When I turned off the car, it didn't power down properly.

The clock runs. The warning lights are on for the oil and voltage gauges. The LED on my BT OBDII lights faintly. The "armed" light blinks sporadicly. Nothing electrical operates, however. That's it. I can't get it outta park either.

In desperation I tried to jump it and of course nada. I didn't try the interior lights (dang it!) or operating the roof - it was pouring rain.

This sounds a lot like an electronics module went south. But which one? Only having this for two months, I'm not familiar enough with her yet.

On the way home from work tonight, I may try disconnecting the battery to do a "reset". Other than that, I'm clueless.

Oh, and it's stranded at a Walmart. :

There are no Jaguar dealers within 80 miles, and I'm not comfortable yet with the local "foreign car" shops.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

First thing is to check all fuses and main electrical connections such as in the fuse link box behind the spare.
Its also possible it felt insulted by being driven to a Mal-Wart. These Jags are finicky creatures.

I'll look at that, thanks!

It's such an odd failure mode. I've had some quirkiness with the top and windows, and the tilt wheel. All have been intermittent at one time or another. Except on the test drive, of course!

Hi.

I had something similar. Turned out to be poor contact at the battery poles.

- Clean and retighten your battery connections.
- Check battery leads connections to the megafuses in front of spare tire.
- Recharge your battery.

Thanks! When it didn't respond to the jump, I figured it was something downstream. The clock requires no input, yet still runs. The warning lights on the gauges are on, so there's power. That's what led me to believe a module somewhere. But I have no clue which one would do all that! Everything else seems to involve a sensor or data to or from the part that isn't working. Gauges, dash, locks, windows, tilt wheel, ignition...

I not usually in the dark on a car I own, but I'll admit I never had one go south so soon after purchase.

Grr!

If that mystery module isn't getting power due to a blown fuse, that would do it too. Gotta check, and don't have much time to get it out of the parking lot.

Well, its a Jag. They are not usually as bad as the old ones with LUCAS gremlins but because of their complexity they can come up with some rather amusing problems.
When I bought my Jag MKII that was supposedly someones daily driver it worked great during the obviously to short test drive. However it massively overheated on the 20 minute drive home and had to have it towed home. Jags are fun.

Sounds like my 88 XJS V12 Hess and Eisenhart coming home a few years ago, except it was the alternator. 80 miles and the $500 tow later... Grr.

You mention a BT OBDII. Could that have drained your battery?

They are supposed to switch off when the ignition is off. The operative word is "supposed". However they do not cause much of a drain regardless and it would take a long time for it to kill a battery,

The "power applied but not active" light is on faintly. The car started just fine at work, drove 20 miles north on I-5, and went bonkers when I turned the car off. Didn't respond to a jump, either.

Still sounds like a bad connection somewhere.

First thing to do, check for codes, next

remove your battery, sound like it has a bad cell shorting out, have it tested, re-instal.
Also clean the mega fuses on the positive cable in trunk, and check that ground cable in trunk, if its green/white , its toast.

Inspect for moisture as well in all the fuse compartments. I have heard the relays can do this from Jaguar themselves as well. And after this, I would take it to them to scan your bus and see where the power/circuit failure lies.

That simple.

Hi again, All!

It may sound odd, but I have done virtually everything that people recommended, but this time I was armed with a multimeter - I couldn't find mine, so off to the store.

Did some thinking, and figured with a tow and lost wages in the equation, I got a battery and the assistance of my beautiful lady to drive me around. Got a new battery, the multimeter, my portable tool kit, I went at it. But without the fusebox diagram! AAAARRRGGHH!

Voltage on the battery posts was 11.86 VDC. Hmmm. Plenty to make her go. On the terminals, 11.85VDC. Megafuses: 11.85VDC. Voltage to ground cable from there: 11.85VDC. Okay, up forward I go...

I open the fusebox on the driver's side, and start probing. 11.85VC seemingly everywhere - wait, 5VDC?! What the...

I made sure the fuse was fully seated and what should happen but I suddenly see from the corner of my eye the interior lights under the dash are on! I look up and the upper lights are on too! The warning lights on the gauges are out and Galore looks alert.

She fired right up, and all indications were normal.

"Loose connection" diagnosis wins! And I learned something about this car.

All the advice ws good, and I really appreciate the ideas! Thank you everybody!
