The best option for me would be to have the software installed on a PC and the cable to connect it to the car so I can do everything myself, just like I already do for another car, but I don't know where to find it or what I need. I saw a Jaguar IDS installation disc and OBD cable, called V160, for sale online, but the specifications list it as compatible with Jaguar X100 models from 2005 onward. Can anyone recommend what I should buy?
Will a current Jaguar dealership even accept a old Jaguar for service work?
Just curious.

I suspect it varies a lot from dealer to dealer. My nearest dealer is in Tulsa Oklahoma, and they do welcome the older cars, even back to the WW-2 era cars.
I haven't had the occasion to use them much. My 2002 XKR was sold to me with only one key and fob. So my first full day of ownership was spent traveling to Tulsa to see how welcome the old XKR would be .
They did make a key for me and programmed a fob to go with it . They encouraged me to swing by anytime I needed their services.

l am running IDS 125 on old laptop through clone of original VCM, l was told V125 is the latest version suitable for the X100, but certainly NOT an authority on the subject.

How can I get it too?
I called the dealership, but they can’t guarantee they’ll be able to do the programming, since the computer they used runs Windows 98 and they haven’t turned it on in years. So I’d have to leave the car with them for a few days and hope for the best… I’d like to do it myself. Is there a kit with software and a cable available for sale that would work? I’ve seen a few, but they’re all IDS SDD, which, as I understand it, are too recent for my 2000 model car. Any advice on where to find the right tool online?
IDS/SDD up to version 131 is software that runs on Windows XP Professional 32-bit.
On a Jaguar manufactured before approximately 2003, SDD doesn't run; instead, the boot software offers IDS as an alternative. This works on all Jaguar vehicles from 1996 to approximately 2003, including your 2000 XK. Version 125, as well as version 131 (or was it 132? I'm not entirely sure), is the last version that doesn't require an update from Jaguar. And you shouldn't update it!
On eBay, you can often find pre-installed notebooks with IDS/SSD and a compatible Mongoose clone cable. Higher software versions, such as version 167, also work perfectly with your XK, but they require a hacked username and password to prevent the forced software update via (Jaguar) Topix servers. So look for a software version up to 131. That makes things easier. The cable is always the same. Alternatively, there are also the 16x versions for VMs. That saves you an extra laptop and the installation work.
Thanks for the explanation. So, if I understand correctly, version V164 should work on my car, but I need a valid username and password. The description in the link I posted says:
Software Version: Latest JLR SDD IDSV167 – No time limitation – it will NOT expire!
Activated with Login & Password – Allowing calibration files download from topix servers for ECU programming/coding!
Original JLR Pro functions 1:1 vci interface
SDD Engineering Mode Access for programming, coding.
Operating System: Win XP, Win 7
So I think it works, right? I can install it on Windows 7 or XP.
You really don't need to buy the software from anyone, it's available to download for free. You then need a cheap Mongoose clone that will have come from the same factory as the one in that listing above.
I have an old Windows7 laptop and another one running XP on virtual machine, so I only need the software and the cable. Tried this morning to go to a friend who has and indy repair shop, he has one of the best generic diagnostic tool, but there was nothing we could do. I think I'll buy the diagnostic set I linked before.
You can find the software somewhere here in the forum. And an old laptop is fine. Unfortunately, the installation is quite involved. And very important: After installing Windows, disable all network adapters in Windows and don't use any network connection for the internet. Otherwise, you'll have to start the installation process again after 30 days.
You'll need to find a proper guide.
Or just buy a pre-built device. Or run it in a virtual machine.
Finally, this story has a happy ending. Yesterday I took the car to the dealership, which fortunately still had a Genrad 3500 diagnostic system. Using the WDS software, they were able to reconfigure the ABS control module without any problems, and now everything is working. The price was also very reasonable. I'm really happy!
LUCKY YOU!!!
The dealer I worked at years ago got rid of all the old diagnostic units.(PDU and WDS) I offered to buy them but instead, they just took a HAMMER and DESTROYED them.
They told me Jaguar North America advised that they be rendered inoperable.(they were obsolete)
Luckily for me, they kept it. At first they told me they had never programmed the ABS control unit before and didn’t know if it was possible, but it turned out to be very simple. Just to be safe, before installing it, I also checked the used control unit and found defective solder joints in that one too..
This time, to re-solder the joints, I just cut off a corner, and everything works perfectly.
Once a year, I wash the rims and the undertray, for the rest of the body, I use the waterless system. Basically, I just remove some bugs and a little dust. It spends most of its time under a car cover, it's a garage queen!
