Default ABS indicator light persistant

Ive had 2 non Jag repair shops try to find out why ABS indicator light remains on. Trac and ASC message also remain. Sensors have been looked at.

Is Module replacement needed ?

Any tips? Thanks

A little background info would be nice.

What year and flavor XK150? What diagnostic codes have you been given? Have you downloaded and read the relevant info in the free online X150 service manual?

Without that very basic info you might as well be talking to a lamp shade...

Also, some of the ABS modules have simply needed a bit of re-soldering. Without your car info we can't say if yours might be one.

1. You may have better luck posting at the X100 forum since your car's model year fits into that forum...
2. What was the nature of the accident damage, and is it possible that one of the toothed wheels which trigger the speed sensors was also damaged?

I've moved your question from X150 to X100 forum and added your vehicle details.

This is the place to post questions about your model.

To my simple mind you have several different, unrelated, incidents here.

Lets do the ABS sensors first. I assume you know its the front left light from the diagnostic readings?

The basics of the sensor is a ring, called a reluctor ring, that attaches to the wheel. Solid steel thing that looks like a cog wheel. As suggested it consists of a ring with lots of cogs on it, bit like a gear ring. That spins and the sensor attached to the car almost touches the surface of the cogs. Reads how fast its going and the cars computer does the rest.

So a few things can go wrong. The 'cogs' on the ring can get dirty, not surprising with all the muck thrown up from the road or the sensor surface can get dirty or both. The solution is simple. Clean the surface of the ABS sensor and/or wire brush and clean the reluctor ring. That usually works.

The sensor can fail. If you can get the nuts out holding the ABS sensor to the body then its a simple half hour job. However mine twisted off making it much harder.
The cogs on the ring can wear or rust or both. That means it need changing. A Pig of a job to get the old ring off. Will show you pics if you like. Not only that you also need a new ring to replace it. Good luck! I live in the UK it took me a week to find what I think was the last two in the country.

Hope this helps. Will try and find my posting on the subject in another forum.

Just re-read your original posting. You had the ABS sensor replaced and some wiring? It looks like the ring has gone then.

This is the ring. If you look at the top you will see the ABS Sensor. I had sprayed it with WD40 to make its removal easier. Hence the wet look.

This was done as part of some extensive, and expensive, repair work I had done under the car. Take a look http://www.jaguarforum.com/showthrea...=1#post1059602

Just found this too. Shows how hard it is to remove this ring. Enjoy! http://www.jaguarforum.com/showthrea...=1#post1056184

You can read all 4 sensors from the ABS module and see if they as a fundamental resistance have the same reading . A functional check would be to spin the tire by hand and with the meter on the AC scale they will read about 1.0 volts in the correct spin direction .

The sensors face other then the sensors connectors get clouded over with metallic debris that interfere with the signal across the air gap and can be cleaned . Hard to remove and they sometimes break so someone suggested you can reach around on the inside of the wheel hub with some brake cleaner instead of breaking the stuck ones . Don't mix the sensor positions up because some years the sensors are different for lefts and rights and front and back .

After that easy to do thing is to resodier the common ABS module internal point that goes bad . The pic below is for the X308 on the sensor wire pairs to give a better picture

The ABS code and light will not clear until you reach 12.5 MPH so that may throw you off in troubleshooting .

The wiring guide for the 2002 XK8 / R is here :

http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto.../jagxk2002.pdf See page 65 and 28 as the wire colors are different

Default ABS misery

I had the ABS blues with my 2000 XK8. I do my own work but was getting to the point of being not sure what to try. I got a workshop manual CD on ebay which also had the wiring diagrams. I then purchased a OBD code reader (Autel) that could read ABS & CAN codes. Once I knew the codes I was able to go to the workshop manual and follow the steps to fix the problem. Of course this solution is dependent upon having the time, tools and a space to work on the car yourself.

Good luck

My 2002 XK8 had the same array of lights and warnings and all were fixed with the solder repair on the brake ABS controller at the front left of the engine bay.. This does involve bleeding the brakes, but it is the only way to go. If you are handy with a soldering iron it's easy to do yourself, or get one of the exchange units readily available on-line. My advice is to cut or drill a hole in the cover of the module and then epoxy or jb-weld a piece of plastic back over the hole when you're done. The procedure itself is covered by several people on-line, or email me and I'll describe it more completely.

Good luck.

After two years of putting up with the warning messages and fiddling with sensors and soldering the two terminals, I finally replaced the module with a junkyard sourced pump and module for two bills. Everything fine now. I still have the unused pump as a spare.

I have at times cleared the ABS light in my driveway, but I did not realize that I had reached 12.5 mph. Thanks, something we all need to know.

I thought it was 4mph. Maybe varies with the ABS module?
