Default active headlights/2008 XKR

I have a fault light for the active headlights. I understand they are an expensive fix. They illuminate about ten feet in front, in an irregular pattern. Can a mechanic make them non-active like normal headlights? Any ideas on common reasons for the fault light? I have to use high beam or supplement low beam with fog lights
