Welcome Matt,

You should take a look thru the stickies on the main forum page, especially the DIY link. There is advice on both buying and owning this cat. Most of the care and feeding issues that will be common are addressed there.

Car looks very nice. Full disclosure: I love the coupes and I own the same color. Didn't see any engine bay pictures. Looks like the headliner is sagging, a common issue on the coupes I believe. For a 1996 those are upgraded wheels. Leather on front seats has some patina, but doesn't look bad. Can't speak to UK pricing, but should be worth checking into a little more.

Looks nice, except for the steering wheel being on the wrong side...

Hi Coventry Cars, thanks for help.
Thought BRITISH manufactured cars had steering wheel on right?!

Hi Matt

It looks good in the photos and could be a reasonable price, but you need to check it carefully. Check the service history, was it serviced by a Jaguar dealer, independent Jaguar specialist or Arthur Daley. Budget £150 to replace the headlining (assuming you do it yourself).

The key thing to check on UK cars is rust. Get underneath and look at the front crossmember and rear subframe, also the rear wheelarches and the rear of the sills for signs of bubbling. The front floorpans can also rot, but you need to lift the carpet to check. If you are able to take it for a test drive this weekend, check the carpet for dampness afterwards (it is due to rain in your area) as this will indicate such problems.

Being an early car, this will have had a Nikosil engine, which may have been replaced under warranty. Do not worry if it is the original engine, as if it has survived its first years, it will be fine now - but whatever the engine, get the tensioners checked.

As for the steering wheel, it is on the right (correct) side. These countries which insist in having the steering wheel on the wrong side have had to adapt their driving technique by driving on the wrong side of the road to cope.

Good luck with finding the right car, you won't regret it.

Matt,

It seems reasonable from looking at the inventory on their website that this is (as claimed in the ad) a PX the dealer wants to clear.

In addition to the excellent summary renaultvation has given in post #6, the paintwork looks too good for a '96 with that mileage. XK8/XKR picks up lots of front bumper and bonnet stone chips on our UK roads so remedial work is to be expected but it looks almost too perfect for that.

Recent bottom half or full resprays always set alarm bells ringing with me. It's usually done to cover more than surface imperfections.

That being said, if the dealer is within a reasonable distance from you, it's definitely worth a closer look.

Graham
