I am going to have a go at refinishing the leather on my steering wheel. I have been in touch with Furniture Clinic and they said that they no longer do custom colour matching based on the vehicle's trim code. Looking for advice from any here who have had experience in using their products. My trim code is SDZ I have attached ( I hope ) a couple of pics of my wheel and the interior of the door to give you some idea of the colours. Can any of you guys provide advice on what colour I should get based on experience ? Looking at their chart Beige B02 or maybe Stone CR02 ?? I suck at matching colours . Any help is appreciated
Barry, there is a document that I think Motorcarman provided to us. I'm bringing this up because the color code only designates 1 of the 2 or 3 different colors in the cockpits trim.
I have the same problem as you, wear on the leather. Turns out the exact matching oatmeal color for my seats is different than the darn steering wheel.
let me find and post that doc for you, maybe you'll be more lucky than me at finding the steering wheel leather dye.
Tried lots of touch up pens but couldn’t match the colour
Sorry to say this, but I’ve tried numerous leather touch up pens, from numerous suppliers, but just couldn’t match the colour.
It seems that time, sun , dirt and hand oils have affected my steering wheel’s leather colour so I even tried mixing some of the pens’ colours to no avail.
I’ve resigned myself to having to take the wheel off in the future and get it professionally painted 100 percent. Trouble is my XK8 is a daily driver so need to find a convenient time slot to get this done.
Barry you should have the same interior setup as my 2004 SDZ interior. My steering wheel is Sable and matches the dash top.
You can get matching Sable color from the source I used. If the match is as good as the Cashmere then it will work really well.
Info about my source and how to apply it is in my working thread here from when I did the front seats.
I would recommend that you plan on applying a clear coat after you apply the color to keep it from wearing again anytime soon. I would probably apply two clear coats.
From my experience with the clear coats you should go with the dullest finish of the 3 options to best match the shine of the airbag material unless you plan on doing that part as well. I used the mid level gloss clear on my seats and it is really close to matching the shine of the original seat material but I think too shiny for the steering wheel.
I did learn that you can blend the clear coats to get the desired shine amount if needed.
2 things: they advertise a samples pack for about $3.00. After 3 days of email through ebay I found out it's a "sample" pack - you must designate a specific color after you designate your year make model.
Looks like Antelope is n/a. He canceled the order and refunded the $$$ with no explanation after I designated Antelope for my fascia's color.
I used the furniture clinic kit, and it worked brilliantly. The leather colour is only painted on, and what you see is damage to the painted surface. So you remove it and sand it back to the basic leather, and then paint it over and seal it. Just pick a colour you like, and go for it. i removed the steering wheel and sprayed it in my garage, but you can do it in situ with a bit of care, just don't let it get on your seats!
Yes John, mine was Ivory, but I also did my sofa, and I sent them a sample and they matched it, and I did three squabs. Brilliant, I also did the arm rest which again I removed, stripped back to the raw leather and built up with paint, spraying the final coats, and then sealing it with clear.
