Default Aftermarket clear reflectors....

Has anyone got these and had a problem with them going milky?

Two of mine are now white and two on their way.

Currently taking them apart to investigate.

Hmmm.

The two on the left are like this.

The two on the right below.

I've had mine on for two years, still clear but I do keep the car garaged so it's not sitting in the sun getting UV unless I'm out and about.

I bought them from ebay here, 4 x Jaguar XK8, XKR Clear Side Bumper Reflector Lenses (4 pieces) | eBay last year.

Generally speaking we don't have to worry about UV here in Scotland other than getting vitamin D deficiency.

I initially thought it may have been condensation on the inside but it is not. More later from the one I have opened up,

Once I got them opened I tried cleaning with the usual household cleaners, then went on to bleach, brake cleaner and caustic soda.

Nothing had any impact.

So next I decided to bake them, 90degC for an hour did the trick! I had to be careful not to deform them as they do soften.

I'll take more care when I rebuild then to ensure no moisture can get in.

Just wondering how you got the idea to stick them in the oven?

I noticed that when I first made up the caustic soda solution it gets very hot and that did seem to have a slight impact on the problem, but once it cooled down did nothing. So I took it from that experiment that heat rather than caustic soda could be the solution and tried the oven.

With hindsight baking for longer at a lower temp would probably be the safer option.

What a good idea. I would never thought of doing that. Great tip!

Still seems odd, I would not have expected moisture to affect the plastic in a semi permenant way like that.

But glad you found a solution.

I think the plastic must be porous allowing moisture to get in below the surface. I contacted the ebay seller and asked if he had seen it before, he said yes and suggested clear coating the inner surface to prevent the problem.
