Default In the air or on the ground?

97 XK8 Conv with 80,900 miles. Am currently rebuilding the complete front suspension as I intend on keeping the car a long time.

Along with alot of other things, I have replaced the front lower control arm bushings. I thought I once read that the bolts on the 2 lower control arms should only be torqued once the car in back on the ground as they could be damaged otherwise.

Right now it is still in the air but I have not yet torqued them. The JTIS doesn't say to lower the car before torquing.

Would welcome any input on this - thanks.

Any time you do suspension bushings, you're supposed to tighten them once the wheels are on the ground and the body is sitting at normal ride height.

Thank you both for your responses!

I assume that torquing while on the ground only applies to the lower bushings & not the upper control arm whose bushings have also been replaced.

It seems to me that the uppers would not matter as the forces applied to those bushings are not subject to the same twisting that the lowers would go through if you torqued them off the ground & then lowered the car.

Can you confirm this please?
