My changer has been working sort of for some time now. At first the E01 could be cleared by simply removing the cartridge and reinserting it. Recently I got the E01 and couldn't seem to get it working again. I was ready to remove the changer and pull it apart or replace it because the radio just wasn't cutting it for me. While looking for some information to help remove the unit I came across a thread with a fix for the dreaded E01 on a small site out of Sweden.
I tried it, it worked, so I'm just passing it along.
For starters if your cartridge is stuck. Hold the green/blue eject button on the unit and repeatedly tap the cartridge with the handle of a screwdriver. Sooner or later it will pop out. Remove all the cds in the cartridge and put the cartridge back in. The display in the car should show. Disc 1 Check, Disc 1 No Disc, Disc 2 Check, Disc 2 No Disc and so on till it's complete. Reload your CDs and you should be good to go! I had to reinsert my cartridge 2-3 times before it would run the check but once it did all was OK.
I know sooner or later I will have to deal with a non working player but, for now let the music play. I did notice that the number 1 disc position at the changer seemed a bit noisy so I just left the number 1 slot empty. All good
Hope this helps someone else trying to clear the dreaded E01 error code.
To all, just don't let your frustration travel to your fingertips on that blue button. Yes, you can break it with a bit of extra frustration (guess how I know :-)
The CD player system in my wife's 2006 XK8 has not been activated in at least five years. Both of us have always despised those trunk-mounted cartridge units and much prefer the dash-mounted single-play units. I think I will just continue to leave it alone....
My disks were starting to get stuck and give me an error so I took the cartdrige out and cleaned the disk platesI. then rubbed a little WD40 on the slide part and the little nib and everything seems to work fine now.
I have the error code, but I also bypass my CD system and have it set up for bluetooth instead. I have never missed the CDs. I could also do just fine without AM or FM as I never use it.
a time honored method to get the cartridge to release is a few sharp wacks with the rubberized handle of a large screwdriver across the side of the unit while pressing the eject button. Then as mentioned a good cleaning of the cartridge is a good strategy.
My CD player not normally used since I have the superb Discount Stereo Bluetooth system in place . I do keep the cartridge empty and test eject it a few times a month just to keep it functional.
I can't believe I found something that hasn't been brought up here before (unless I didn't see it).
Jonken, You get the Fickle Finger of Fate award. Let's face it when working on Jags it's all about how much cussing it takes to get the job done lol .Curious how did you deal with the broken button?
Jon89, I must admit that trunk mount cd units are/were really awkward and had a short run in the auto industry. I guess it's one of those 20 year old XK8 time capsule devices like the Sat/Nav. However, the sound I get from my cd player as opposed to the radio is worth making the trip to the trunk to load a few cds. Yeah, it's a workout but, someone has to do it. lol
Crvols, I will give the disk cleaning unit lubing a try. Can't see how it could hurt anything so why not and thanks for mentioning it.
Daniel, Bluetooth is the way to go. I finally broke down and got a new Bluetooth receiver for my home stereo and wondered why I waited so long. Now I'm looking at my 100+ disc changer and trying to figure out what to do with it. Guess I'll hang onto it for now this way if the internet should go down for some reason I have my backup music hahaha. How is the tooth business going Daniel? Hope all is well
Again, I like to share my findings with the forum because sharing what you learned with others is what makes this community so valuable and worthwhile.
Cheers!

I thought about hitting it with a sledge hammer but then I calmed down lol. How would you wack the side of the unit since it's surrounded by the metal rack? After writing Daniel back I was wondering why I haven't just gone Bluetooth in the Jag. I listen to Spotify pretty much all the time so why not in the car? The only thing I can think of is I have a couple of CDs that I burned a few years ago and I just like to listen to them when driving the Jag. They put a smile on my face so that's good enough for me.
Andrew,
Do you have any original dire straits cds, I would love to copy a few and really hate the remastered ones?
Not rubbing salt in anyone's wounds but my 2008 XK does read mp3s so I can burn 100+ songs onto a cd, and then 6 cds take care of my listening for weeks.
I tried the bluetooth adapter for my xk8 and didn't care for the interface...sold it on to a fellow forum member.

actually it was the rack that I rapped on, and the top edge of the cartridge player. It worked, and the cartridge ejected. That was all it took to resolve the error message in my case, so I was happy to get the CDs out of there, especially since that I didn’t listen to them anyway.
Dire Straits Cds sorry I can't help you. Their first album came out in 1978 and don't laugh I had it on 8 Track. Brothers in Arms I had on vinyl which I let go of at some point over the years. An mp3 would be awesome but my 2003 was a few years too early for that new innovation in technology lol.
Also, I see you have both an X100 and a X150. I had to make a choice when I bought mine and decided (just on looks really) on the X100 Conv. I have owned and driven many cars over the years but, my Jag is the car I'll have forever. Not the most powerful, best handling or easiest to work on car I've owned but I've never had a car that attracts as much good attention. By that I mean everyone thinks it's a beautiful looking car without wanting to race me. Of course it always makes me smile as well. However, I do often wonder if the X150 is that much more refined or a better driving experience than the previous generation?
Regarding Bluetooth interfaces, Yes, I've heard and tried a few that I wasn't thrilled with as well. Hadn't thought of that but yeah that's true.
I get it sometimes these units need some tough love. Probably like many components they need to be used on a regular basis and not sitting dormant or unused for long periods of time. Reminds me of the time I had to put my flashers on while I stopped on the side of the road. Guess what, they wouldn't shut off so I had to drive all the way home with them on. hahaha Just a stuck switch but, I know I never had them on and wondered when was last time they had been turned on?
Broken button? "Oh", I thought to myself, "I've done so much electronics work, this should be easy!" After all its just a momentary switch at the other end of that button. I'll just wire a new switch in and mount it somewhere on the changer's outer case."
Ever notice that when you get a little "full" of yourself, Mr. Murphy just grins to himself . . . "He he he. . ."
Opened her up - its a bloody teeny tiny switch with leads, oh, about the width of a hair! I'd have needed to buy a soldering unit designed for SMD (surface mounted devices). Rude awakening, just not worth the effort.
So, for the months of usage before I too bought the Discount Stereo Bluetooth converter, I took a narrow wooden dowel, snapped one end off in a way the wood tapered to a point. Chucked the now useless blue button and got pretty good at slipping and angling the end of the dowel in just right to hit the tiny switch. . . No, not a sexy show-off type solution :-).
Ah, the good news is that Bluetooth sounds better and replaces any need to use the cd changer for me, so all's good soundwise.

I absolutely love the appearance of the x100 and I also found that almost everybody appreciates it...I have had people get out of their car at an intersection to try to determine what brand it is. It has a universal appeal to many different groups pf people. It is not intimidating but rather enticing. The xk150 is more muscular looking and while still drawing positive comments and thumbs up those tend to come more from males...it is still appreciated by the opposite sex but the interactions are far less.
I love the looks of the x100 and I really, really like the looks of the xk150.
The xk150, imo, is without a doubt a better car all around. Everything is better functionally, looks are subjective, I like the looks of it.
I'm recoloring the leather on the x100 and fixing several leaks at the present, even with the car on jack stands neighbors will walk by the xk150 to admire the white beauty.
John, appreciated the Sunday morning chuckle. A wooden dowel lol. That's something I would come up with in a panic after realizing I broke the Fing thing. One thing I realized years ago when working on these cars is you have to be "creative" when dealing with problems. Sometimes it's a matter of parts (fasteners/clips) not being available or being obscenely expensive for what you actually get because it comes in a Jaguar parts bag.
I have some decisions to make right now. My Sat/Nav replacement is a high priority because as much as I don't want to deal with it luck would have it that my screen started to bubble on its own in a temperature controlled garage. Yes, it looks horrible. The three gauge conversion is what I would like to do but, I can't seem to find decent wood dash panels to replace mine. Of course, mine are perfect with not a scratch to be found on them. On Ebay (looking for years) I find panels that are scratched, cracked and/or sun faded. As a general rule I am cheap but, I would be willing to plunk down some decent money for a nice matched set. I have seen the different options for the Sat/Nav screen replacements: smartphone, Garmin units and tablets. Meh, nothing is getting me too excited but I need to do something over the winter. So I am wondering if I should just address both the CD and Sat/Nav problem with a one shot solution. ? Maybe a wooden dowel? lol
That is a proper garage I guess everything is bigger in Texas. lol I think we are in agreement regarding the differences between the two generations but, it's interesting to hear your take since you own and drive both.
It is not intimidating but rather enticing. That's a really good explanation for the X100s appeal. My feeling is the car is "Sexy" and different which is why women seem to really like it as much as men do. With all the cars I've owned over the years I have never owned something with such universal appeal. Let's face it Jag owners tend to be a different and non conforming breed and that's fine by me.
What are you doing to the interior? I need to order the dye/paint for my drivers side bolster which is not that bad yet but needs a going over. One of the members here, Rothwell, has a very worthwhile thread about restoring his XK8. There's a lot of good advice on interior fixes and techniques. Look for it or I'll send it to you if I can find the link.
I always refer to Rothwell's excellent thread when I undertake some fixes on my xk8.
I'm quite happy with the coloring/repair of the leather. I used the same vendor as Rothwell for the 'dye'. I redid the rear seat and passenger seat so far. I'll finish up with the drivers seat this weekend and install...then onto the re leak.
(the redish cast is due to shooting under fluorescent lighting...in real life the colors are uniform)
Looking good my friend that dye (lol) paint is amazing. Was going to do my front seats in place but, taking them out seems like a much better option. When I get my seats out I need to do the headrest fix (or do I?) and was thinking some fresh foam/cushioning on the seat bottom wouldn't hurt either. One thing leads to another as always. I want to see it completed and would appreciate it if you can tell me any tips you learned from doing it. Good luck

Andrew, if you go with the gauges, do the Real Gauges modification. I did both on my car, since the NAV unit is worthless. It wasn't a tough job, but well worth it.
both of my headrests needed repairing, I did that and then tested that they functioned, using a power supply, before buttoning up. As typical some one had already been in there and did a less than professional repair...missing screws, fasteners, etc, etc.
