Default Antenna

I have managed to get the top section operating but wondered how many sections there are when fully extended. There are now three sections that work before it stops but i feel there should be more, The sections rotate and i have put plenty of penetrating fluid on and tried to gently pull upwards to see if i can free the other sections (if there are any). Many thanks . Anthony.

Definitely more than 3 sections for the OEM aerial. Probably more like 5 at a guess. You can tell by looking at the sections to see how thick the "steps" are.

I just extended mine and had a look - 5 sections.

If my experience is anything to go by, you may need to remove and dismantle the mechanism to remove the big lumps of old silicon grease which clug up the cogs. I posted how I did this somewhere in this thread:

When you get it fully open just give it a wipe with ATF, don't use silicon grease - as @markdpeter said, it clogs up the antenna sections and eventually the gear drive will strip the teeth off the nylon drive cable.

A wipe once a month with ATF keeps everything working smoothly and ATF doesn't attack plastics or rubber.

Before I added a switch in my center console to cut off power to the antenna to keep it from extending(solely for hating the look of it) it would often not fully extend and almost never fully retracted. I got it to fully extend one day with slight pulling force up while a helper started car and noticed it was slightly bent towards the rear of car most likely due to wind resistance. I gently massaged it as straight as
i could and used some penetrating oil to lube it up. It then fully extended and retracted every time, then I added the switch to cut it off so I never see it again unless I choose to. It took looking at it from either side of the car to see the slight bend towards the trunk, which was barely there but enough to interfere with proper functioning.
