Default Any one else noticing XK8 prices rising?

I've been toying with possibly buying a coupe XK8 since I finished my convertible mod. I've always thought the coupe was sooo much sexier than the conv but I wanted a soft top for summer, and just assumed I could find a coupe at a good price later.
Six months ago, I could find 3-4 cars at any given time in the 6-8000.00 range but now I'm lucky to find anything under 11000.00 that's newer than 2002. Even the older cars seem to be going around 10,000.00 if in decent shape. And if I do find one in my price range, it's already gone!!
Are our cars starting to increase in value? Did I finally buy one at a good time, just before they become difficult to find?
I'm wondering if the buzz about the new F type and new jaguar look in general is helping our cars as well. I've been offered 17,000.00 for my 2002 XK8 since I finished my kit. (Probably what I've got in it!)Any one else noticing XK8 prices rising?-image.jpg

I have seen the same accross the board, not only on the XK8/R. As much as I love my XK8, I also like the late 70's and early 80's BMW's. I have seen the prices on those also going up during the last year. And it seems it is on both motorcycles and cars.

I think it shows that the economy has improved, and that people have confidence again to start spending money on non-essential items, such as XK8's or other classic cars, driving up the demand and prices. The problem is that if you want to upgrade, you will get more for your XK, but the one you are buying will be more as well.

I don't think the F-Type buzz is the main reason, except maybe to remind a few potential car buyers that there is still a company called Jaguar. Personally, I think people like us that drives the cars helps as well..

Maybe not so much the F type specifically but advertising in general. Since Tata motors took over, they've obviously increased the advertising budget and I see commercials much more than ever here in the USA. AND they're actual commercials with the care featured! I liked the Alive commercial but it really didnt show the cars much.
Hey, anything to increase values!!

Sports, muscle and Conv. cars always go up in summer, that is why it is always better to sell in spring than fall.

Agreed. If you decide to buy a convertible during ragtop season, you'll definitely pay quite a bit more for it. The three convertibles we've owned were purchased in December 1982, November 1986, and January 2012. Much better negotiating power at those times of the year in our neck of the woods....

The deals on sports cars are always in the winter up north. My Corvette was bought in February and my XKR was bought in January; both Convertibles.

I did buy my A8L in November though and I would have thought an AWD car would go for more near winter, so IDK on that type of car.

I have noticed that the prices have held firm and in some cases increased over the past few months. Whereas there were many cars in the 7-10K range (not necessarily nice ones) here in Southern California, there are virtually none now below $10K. But I have seen prices rise significantly, for instance, on cars like my Pantera in the very recent past. Several months ago you could buy a nuts and bolts fully restored car for what you have to pay for a nice driver now, probably seen a $10-20K shift. Who knows if it will last, but it's good to see a rebound.

That's one of the benefits when a new model comes out and really focuses attention on the marque, particularly in the case of cars like Jaguar that have sort of been relegated to background (hence the reason we could all pick up our XK8 and XKR for a mere fraction of the original cost).

I am not sure that all the recent hoopla necessarily results in dramatically greater resale prices but I still think it makes them more noticeable and sell-able.

I am rather curious about that red coupe. It looks like a touring car. I actually saw this very same car on the highway a month ago and it looked spectacular.

I believe if we look at production numbers and then figure how many have been totaled, or salvaged, we begin to see a drop in supply. This past week I have located 5 97 XK-8s being listed for salvage, 5 - 98s, 2 - 99s, 3 - 2000s, 2 - 2001s, 1 ea 2002/5/6 and 3 XKRs between 2001 and 2005. That's here in the United States. Hurricane Sandy took out several. Keep in mind those are the ones I located this week alone.

Take care of what you have.

I think we may be seeing a more knowledgable buyer and seller in the market. You are not going to get top dollar if you haven't done the important things like tensioners and hoses. If you see an engine picture and it has the alloy thermostat tower, the price is usually higher. The moral is well maintained cars go for more. Especially a California car the wouldn't know what rust even was and the paint looks brand new.

One of the only remaining advantages to being in California--good for your car

I've always bought my convertibles in winter but never noticed a coupe price change so much in summer. I think since we have 3 to 1 convertibles to coupes in USA, maybe that's why the prices are going up?
I've considered selling my XF this fall as well and even noticed the resale price has actually stayed the same in the last year. Up till now, the price went down 2-4000.00 each year.

Default book value up

Bought car from dealer at $300 over book value, on 6/20/ 2011. car had 16,000 miles on it. I just checked Blue Book value,as of today. The cost is $1,187 higher, with 27,000 miles on it (If a dealer were to sell it at book value today) So I've had a gain in my investment

I had mine at my jaguar dealer to pick up my new floor mats for my XF and they went crazy over it. They had a gorgeous stratus gray 2007 xk base model that wasn't in quite as good interior condition as mine so I test drove it. When I got back, they were actually showing MINE to another customer, pointing out how custom it was and the arden kit and wheels and such.
Now mu book value is around 10-11 without my upgrades. When they asked me if I was interested in the newer XK, I said yes but my car would never get me close to the trade. I was shocked when he came back with 17000.00 for mine with a 10.000.00 difference. That's the second offer of 17 I've had I less than a week!!
Now, I know they probably stole the 2007 xk so there was room to play but still!! My 2002 arden style had a swarm of people around it the whole time I was there!! Mybe the more unique the car, the higher the perceived value!!

Default I sure hope so!

I currently have my '99 convertible for sale for $8500. With only 44700 miles, maybe I am asking too little.

It depends what you've addressed on it. Tensioners, coolant upgrades (thermostat housing, plastic manifold above housing, etc...)
I've seen several pre 2002 that haven't had any of these things dealt with that are around your price. Usually if the first generation cars that have had these done, they've been in the 10-12000.00 range depending on mileage.
I've looked at 11 cars and amazed how many haven't had tensioners changed and have close to 100,000.00 miles!!

Have you gotten much interest at that price? If you are marketing it well and the car is in good shape IMHO it should be long gone at that price with low mileage.

I purchased my '99 convertible with 93,000 miles in October of 2010 for $9,998. It is a California / Arizona car, there's absolutely no rust and the paint is good too. I thought it was a good deal at the time as I had been searching quite extensively so I knew what the market was.

You're in VA, do you have any rust issues?

Funnily enough normally when I buy a car I deliberately stop looking because you usually see one that looks better just after the purchase but I have left the filter in place this time and I haven't seen anything that comes close on the price I paid.

Hopefully that means prices truly are rising!
