All fixed now. Pass side tensioner stuff was the culprit, jumped a tooth in timing. So I had both sides done, new water pump, hoses, plugs, fan belt tensioner pulley stuff. She runs like a new once again.

Hey LEW,

I asked you four months ago what the $1000. price you posted was all about. You figure out an answer yet?

Last week, I priced up a list of timing chain components that some other guy here told me he wanted, I beat everybody's best price by $100 off the bottom line, and it still came to over $700.00 . That was a waste of my time too, he stuck me with the stuff.

So do you have mechanics down there that work for loose change, or are you just posting more of your bogus prices to bust my ***** and show everybody how sharp you are?

looks like you took the proactive approach Tim, that should give you some confidence in driving it alot more in the future. Water pump and tensioner puller are eventual headaches. Good choice. If you ever sell her now, that little repair you just did will be worth alot towards her.

I have never posted bogus prices! I have only posted prices that I have been able to get! Your bashing of me is totally indignant! All I want to do is give the Jaguar owners the resources for best pricing that I have been able to find. Whether you believe me or not is of no concern to me. These cars are expensive to maintain and I am only passing along information that I have found. I think that is what this forum is all about. I am sorry that you feel that I am infringing on your integrity, because that is not what I have tried to do. I only want to help give the best information that I have discovered in my own research to keep my cars in good working order. Sorry you feel this way!!

Yeah, thanks for the posturing. I asked for facts. That's what I thought people came here for.

Jagtech,
BTW, I went back to your post commenting on having my tensioners replaced and as then I did not read a question in your statement.

The fact is that I got my parts from Coventry West in Conyers, GA. I then took them to an independent mechanic and he installed them in my car. This was the upper and lower tensioners. I am not posturing at all! What else can I say?

I believe HLGeorge paid a grand for the job. He has nothing to gain by posting a bogus price; however, it is a very low price indeed. The two independents in Daytona Beach charge $1400 and $1500 for the secondaries only. And these shops are not hi-end prestige repair facilities. Gordo

Default I've been having nightmares of orange plastic tensioners coming to get me.

I'm having both upper and lower tensioners changed out by an independant here in L.A. With all these horror stories I don't mind spending the money as a preventative messure. I'm possitive it will more than pay for itself in the long run .

I think that it's a good move! I bought my XKR 3 years ago. I had a beer with a tennis buddy who had Sedan, and we discussed the potential problem of the tensioners failing. We both agreed that it was worthwhile preventative maintenance, and decided to get them done ASAP. Long and short of it is that I went ahead and had mine done, but he never did. As you might guess, he was tooling down the road one day and out of the blue they went! He said that it was the most catastrophic, heartwrenching, crunching noise that he had ever heard! The engine was toast, and he ended up pretty much giving the car away for a few bucks. Yeah, get it done and get some peace of mind!
Regards,
Brian

I think alot of people have the Primaries changed when it is unnecessary. I changed mine because I mistook a VTC noise for primary rattle. When I got the front cover off, both the chains and the tensioners were fine. No wear at all. This coincides with a lot of advice I got beforehand. That the vast majority of chain/tensioner problems are limited to the secondaries. gordo

OK, I know you are Captain Acronym, but what in hell is a VTC ? Or are you devising your own now, like devious dallas does?

PBD= Pry Bar Diagnostic?
TACBOBT= Towed across country because of bad tires?

Well done, Maja. Before rampant vehicle oversophistication (RVO) came into vogue, you had to just jam the turkey down by the exhaust manifold and watch the odometer.

I guess $103K for a new XKR wouldn't be so bad, if it enables you to drive right past the in-laws house at Thanksgiving and still be able to get a good meal.
