Default Basic question: ATF, how many litres?

I dug around in the FAQ but never found the number of litres of fluid needed for a drop and fill for a ZF-5HP24...

Thanks!

All depends on what you get out. It says 10 litres. I'm about to do it within a week or so. I'm going to do it by using the cooling hoses in the front radiator and using the trans to pump out the oil which includeds the converter. I'm going to get about 14 litres just in case. You pump it out until the color changes and then check the level by the fill plug and temp.

I was following your earlier post, what brand of ATF did you decide on? At 10-14 litres price will make a big difference. I read elsewhere in the forum that Mobil1 synthetic ATF meets ZF specs.

I've used the transmission pump method successfully in other cars but have never dropped the pan or changed the filter as part of that process.

When I drop the pan I'll lose 4 or so litres. I presume I reinstall the pan and then pump the rest out (which will be mostly from the converter) with the trans pump while filling at the same time. Then check the level. Correct?

If you're dropping the pan and changing the filter, expect to use 6 to 7 quarts of ATF. There's probably no reason to purchase anymore than 8 quarts. If you're purchasing ZF fluid, buying many more quarts might require you to take out a second mortgage on your house.

I use Castrol Import Multi-Car fluid, which is readily available @ OReillys and Autozone. Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF is another fluid that'll work.

Default Hobson's choice

Thanks Bamaman.

7 quarts would be 70% of the 10 quarts it holds. Not bad I guess.

Pumping it out replaces 100% in theory but leaves an old filter in place and whatever sludge has accumulated in the pan.

Sort of a Hobson's choice.

I'm still learning and haven't done my first change. What I was going to do was drop the pan and clean it,change the filter ( it's a 99 with separate filter) then put the clean pan and filter back on. I would then do the pump out thru the cooling hoses until I get a change in color. Then do the fill plug and temp. to check the fluid level. Does this many any sense ?

I used Mobil 1 Multi-Vehicle ATF. Filter change and drain. So far, so good. No evidence of any problems with shifting, smoothness, noises, etc. IMO the whole OEM fluid business has been blown way out of proportion.

I went with the Castrol import, I'm waiting for the filter gasket set to come in. I should be doing it next week, I'll let you know how it went.
