Default Battery light came on; Alternator?

Looks like my 2003 XKR is piling on the issues right now 🙃. Today my red battery light illuminated (no accompanying message, just the red battery icon lit up). I took my multimeter and took a reading at the battery with the engine running. It read 11.2-11.5 volts while revving to 2k rpm.

Did my alternator take a crap and I need to replace that?

With the car off the battery read 12.5 volts.

Yes alternator both the light and the voltage say so . I just fitted one ..air box out ..some threaded rod and washers and a socket to move the sliding spacer when you re fit.

Rather than replacing the alternator in my wife's 2006 XK8 when it died in July 2018, I had a local alternator & starter shop refurbish it to good-as-new condition with the appropriate Denso kit. Less expensive than purchasing a new one, and a guaranteed fit and finish because I stuck with the original component....

Thanks all, I wouldn’t be able to keep my jaguars without the helps of these forums. I will try and call around a few alternator shops. If that doesn’t work out what do you guys think of this,

FWIW, my alternator died a coupe months back as well. Could not seem to locate anything locally. Ended up ordering a no-name unit on eBay in new condition. Installation from the top was a breeze, unit working fine since then. Doing research on eBay, it seems like there are electronics rebuilt kit for our models for even less $. If you feel your failed unit is in good enough mechanical condition (bearings, corrosion, etc.), swapping out just the electronics might be an option as well. I kept my old Denso unit around and plan on doing that if this cheap part eventually fails on me.

What others are hinting above is that parts store sourced units have sometimes proven to be a disappointment, i.e. failing soon after installation, sometimes multiple times. The general sense is that Denso alternators are worth hunting for (in new or rebuild condition).

Best of luck, keep us posted.

It must be alternator Thursday. I believe mine just bit the dust! Hobbled home without lights and just barely got the car into the driveway. Ran when parked! (This is the second time the car has barely made it into the driveway.
But barely is better than calling a tow truck !)

Strand0020....

That happens from time to time! I had the same problem Yesterday......New Alternator! Bunch of Bucks! New Battery! 2 Weeks ago! Will this ever STOP? My pile of Bucks is getting LOW!

These Cars are expensive! You pay a Bunch when you Buy them and then you continue to pay for the Repairs while you are driving them! They sell them for about $90,000.00 and then you Paid an additional $90,000.00 to drive them.....By the time it is all over with...I could have bought a Ferreri! But I didn't want a Ferreri.......did I ???

No, you don't want a Ferrari. Had a friend with a Testarosa. TIming belt was every 2 years, and it was an engine out event, to the tune of $20k. The Lotus owners complain that when they have to change their timing belt every couple of years, which can be done in place, and isn't too hard.

If you don't know which end of the screwdriver to hold, yes, these cars could be expensive if you have to take it to a shop. I get a kick out of seeing the dealer invoices that people post with their listings on BringATrailer. $700 to change the spark plugs, which is a 30 minute job if you are slow. They charge up to $29.50 per plug, for the exact same plugs that you can buy locally for $6.

The trick is to find a well-cared for car at a great price. I found a 1-owner car, serviced by the dealer in NYC, for $11,700. Yeah, I've spent a few bucks on preventative maintenance, but I enjoy most of that, and it's comforting to know that my car should serve me well for many years with only minimal attention.

Mustang Bill!!

What's a Mustang Bill doing driving an XKR? ....Bill, I'm just "Bitching" about having to spend Money! It's has been a while since I've had to buy a Battery and Alternator during the same Month and I'm not Happy about it! This is my 4th X-100, starting back in 1997 with a 1996 XK8 Coupe! She and I went through the Timing Chain problem together! That was before a pretty Lady decided that She had to have it! It took me awhile before I found the 2000 XKR Coupe in the NYC Area! I drove it until mu Dentist decided that He needed it more than I....Then the 2003 XKR from Chicago kept me company for a good while.....Until a Lady turned Left across 3 Lanes of traffic and totaled it! After a couple months, I finally found my current Love...2005 XKR Coupe....But here several years later, she has started wearing down a little!! I'm starting over again Today with a new Battery and Alternator....It's OK! I love the Coupe, as She is beautiful and fun to drive!

Hope you enjoy your little "Green Machine"!!!

I've been 73MustangBill for a long time, on many forums. I bought my Jaguar a year ago, sight unseen, and I had never driven or even sat in one. She is such a great car, I decided to sell the Mustang, as the Jaguar made the Mustang redundant. Sold the Mustang on Bring A Trailer. Holey Crap was that a fun auction. On BAT, if someone bids during the last 2 minutes, they reset the clock back to 2 minutes. At the first 2 minute mark, the bid was up to $18k, which I was happy with. FIVE bidders started a bidding war that went on for 15 minutes, and in the end, the sale price was $28,000. She's now a rental car in Monterey, CA.

Love the Jaguar every time I take her out. Just finished swapping the NAV unit for RealGauges instruments. I'm playing with the Lotus right now, but will be replacing hydraulic top hoses soon, and coolant system preventative maintenance.

...or am I sharing too much?

Just ordered a remanufactured alternator from Rock Auto. There was a Denso, but it turned out they were all Denso alternators, even the AC/Delcos, so I bought the $115 alternator (least expensive one that included the pulley) from Pure Alternator or some such. We shall see.

please let me know how it goes. I see on rock auto there were two options for alternators from Pure Energy a 140amp one and a 120amp one.

For me I called a local alternator shop here in Arizona that said they had an OEM refurbed unit in stock for $133 which might be the route I take. Hopefully I can find time to take the alternator off my car this weekend!

Oh crud ! I don't see an option for 120 or 140 amps. Would have ordered the higher one, but I only see 120 amps listed. (Probably the only size for 1997.) I'm tight, but not that tight. Too late now, but I'll report how it goes.

All of the 1997 XK8 Rock Auto alternators look the same when you click on more information and all say they were remanufactured from a Denso unit.

If you can get a 140 amp unit for $133 and it's on the shelf - why not? That's about what I paid, including shipping and tax.

Hopefully we will both be on the road again by the weekend...Next weekend for me anyway as delivery is during the week.

To my knowledge, the alternator change from 120A to 140A occurred early in the 2003 MY, I am _guessing_ with the introduction of the HID headlights. That VIN cutoff shows in the list of options for a 2003 MY.

Okay so I have all the connectors off of the alternator, all the nuts off the alternator, belt, etc. But the alternator is still in the car, before I break anything the alternator doesn't move in its current state. How do I get this bolt out just hammer it out?

Do I just hammer this bolt out or>? 2003 XKR

From memory, there is another through bolt similar to the one you circled (use clues from the replacement part). Once removed, you can keep the circled bolt loosely in place and then use a try bar to gently rotate the alternator off its bracket. On my car (parked outside, not a garage queen), this came off easily, no hammer was involved. I also worked entirely from the top, starting by removing the air box and its bracket.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

That's odd: it looks like a stud rather than a bolt (star drive on the end). Perhaps the thread on the mount got stripped at some time?

Here's a pic of the mount from the JEPC:

2 & 6 need to be removed to free the alternator.
