Bent Shifter or another Problem
I just recently changed outthe radio in my '01 XKR and in the process had a little pressure on the shifter while it was in park. Is it possible for the shifter to bend? It looks like pretty hard steel but it being bent is the only thing I can think of to explain my shifter situation.
The shifter appeared to be out of line with the shift indicator. In park the shifter was a bit lowwer than park and when I tried to put it in drive the shifter wouldn't move back far enough to put it into drive. I opened it up and adjusted the shifter cable with the two adjustment nuts so that the shifter rod was now aligned with the indicator and it would go back far enought to shift into drive. But now it doesnt line up for the manual shift side. When I slide it into manual 4th from drive the adjusted tranny cable moves the white plastic bracket forward. At that point the white bracket doesn't line up with the shifter rod properly and you cant put it back into the drive side. Then the tranny error light comes on and it goes into restricted performance mode.
With the shift indicator bracket off I can adjust everything so that it works fine. But when I put the indicator bracket back on the shift rod doesn't move back far enough to push the cable and tranny into drive. If I adjust everything so that it can go into drive with the shift indicator installed the shifter rod is misalligned with the manual shift side and if I try to go into that side I get the performance error and the little rod on the shifter rod that is supposed to slide into the white bracket don't line up with the bracket.
I spent 2 hrs adjusting the cable back and forth and all I can think of is that somehow the rod got bent. I can;t even see how to remove the whole rod assembly to replace it. I am sure they are expensive from the dealer and would want to make sure mine is bent before I ordered one even if I could figure out how to change them.
HELP!!! Ideas...theories...anything!!!!
Thanks.
Mark

RE: Bent Shifter or another Problem
Greetings,
The gear selector is pretty stout, I think it is just about impossible for you to have bent it. Then again, I guess it depends how heavy the music is that came from the radio....
The gear selector cable has a steady bracket that is bolted to the left side of your transmission: the outer cable is mounted in a rubber bush and must not move fore and aft when the inner cable moves as you change gears. Either the outer cable is moving at that point, or it has come loose at the shifter end where the adjutment fitting is crimped onto it. The outer cable moving on either end would explain your problem. If in fact that is the case, you have to r&r the center console and replace the cable. Once a good cable is properly adjusted, the adjustment does not change.

Well,I just went out and looked at a partially stripped '97 XK8 to see if I could provide any other ideas. When you're pulling back on the selector lever with it locked in park, you're pulling against the interlock bracket. If you pull hard enough, either you are going to bend it, or the gear selector.

Just my 2 cents.
The XK8 and XKR are different at the shifter due to the R having the mercedes trans. Regular Xk8 has a rotary switch mounted to the trans for tcm to interpret what gear you are selecting. The XKR has a dual linear switch mounted to the right side of the j-gate. This is what he took off with the two nuts. When you put this back on, make sure that the two pins line up in the switch. It is hard to explain. If one of the pins is not lined up, will prevent shifter from coming back from manual shift to drive. Use a flash light so you can see properly. I believe the shifter hasto be in neutral when installing as the newonss come with a zip tie that you dont cut off until installed.
Hope this helps. I would post procedure for dual linearswitch replacement but not in a convenient place to do so at this time.

Qualifiers:
I will ALWAYS yield to FJT, he has far more experience than I on late model vehicles and his comments are always spot-on;
Components pictured are from a 1997 XK8 N/A;
My latest parts microfische is May 1999;
I have not removed a dual linear switch from an S/C car, that component and the white plastic sliding block are the only different items for S/C variants shown in my microfische.
So I just tried to upload the photos, and "the file is too large".
Try going to my webpage and clicking on 'Photostrem", I'll post everything there.

RE: Bent Shifter or another Problem
the dual linear switch has a bit of ajustment on the box.. about 3-4 mm .. which can help adjust the lights not lighting up.. but from my experience i have seen people bend the shifter rod.. to replace.. the whole shifter assembly has to come out and taken apart.. . But they do bend.
