Default Best looking cell phone holder ever - home made – with pics

So I had an idea and it seems to work really well. I hated all the cell phone holders I had so here is what I did. My phone comes with a metal back, if yours doesn't it is easy to put in. You can put something between the phone and the case or in the battery compartment.

Anyway I purchased 2 rare earth magnets, they are real cheap. I put them on a piece of gorilla tape and then put them behind my dash. My phone now attaches to the dash without any visible holder at all. It works great! 5 minutes and $11.

Neat, I'm surprised they hold thru the metal backing behind the veneer. Good idea, be sure not to scratch the wood finish!

you would find it very hard to get a magnet that size in the back of a phone though.

Nice idea looks good aswell

You do not need a magnet in the back of the phone only a thin piece of metal, I am sure you can find something around the house to cut. You can use the top of a Altoids tin or something like that. The phones that can do wireless charging should already have that capacity.

Neat and unobtrusive which is more than can be said for any aftermarket phone/accessory bracket I've seen.

Default Cell Phone Holder

Great idea.

My only concern is the instrument the mag's are next to. On your next start up, check the instrument and see if it is affected by the mags. If not? Good to go and thanks for the idea.

quick update. The gorilla tape did not hold so I used a drop of super glue along with the tape. Hopefully this will hold.

The concept is working great.

Scott, I was a little bit concerned about having a couple of rare earth magnets (I've used them on other things before and they're pretty powerful magnets) on the back of a smart phone for extended periods of time.

Have a look here and make you're own decision: Will a magnet damage my smartphone? | blog.first4magnets.com

It looks a very elegant solution though.

I have done this but stuck the magnet to a phone case. Then i clip my phone into it when i get in the car. I love the uncluttered look

I have been using this for over a year with my Nexus 5 and my wife uses hers for her IPhone 5 and we have never had a problem. The force is not that strong after it passes though the dash, not even as strong as my InfiniApps. But I guess it is worth considering. I am about to pull the trigger on the OnePlus One, so if something goes wrong I will let you know, but at $300 bucks for a great cell phone now, I can take the chance.

Hi Scott,

If you're getting an HTC then check out their car kit. I've got the HTC One with this: HTC CAR ACCESSORIES Specs and Reviews | HTC United Kingdom
As soon as it goes in the holder it goes into car mode and then connects to the stereo via bluetooth. Googlemaps is also my satnav. Taken me over Europe fine.

I like the magnet under the veneer idea. I am going to try it. Thanks.

Now, what is your ingenious cupholder solution?

I think the idea is excellent, I would consider evaluating if you can get a MagSafe iPhone charger to work through the veneer now that iPhones come with built-in magnets. You might as well have it also charge your phone.
