Removed the license plate bracket from the front end this afternoon. I'm left with two small screw holes in each of the two vertical black plastic grill slats. Trimmed off the remnant black plastic raised by removing the screws with a razor blade. Now the four holes are flush and hardly noticeable. I may try to fill them, but with what? The filler material would have to match the vertical black plastic grill slats because painting any filler material would just draw the eye even more to that area....

Tried to fill mine with a fiber filler, when i sanded the filler and it failed to hold. Years ago had a body shop weld a crack in a spoiler due to bagging a a deer ( basically blew hot air and melted a PVC rod) The repair last a year or two then started cracking. This is why i reinstalled the bracket and installed a cat tag. Jim

I'm leaning more towards leaving the four nicely-trimmed and nearly-invisible screw holes in the two vertical black plastic grill slats alone. If I come up with an appropriate filler material that matches the color of the grill slats and has a decent chance of staying in place for the long run, I'll post it here....

What Ho!
Jon, you might toddle down to your local auto body supply chappie. They do make a black poly plug with a mushroom type head and little spiney things on the shaft. I have used the little blighters on various occasions and found them dashed brilliant.

yeah I hate the requirement for front license plates in california but NOT rears! I wanted to put one of those nice front mesh grilles on but what's the point if a stupid plate is going to cover it?

Where I live we also have the onerous annual personal-property tax on cars, boats, etc. It's like paying the sales tax all over again, each and every year you own the thing Name: icon_smile_dead.gif

Don't get me started on taxes. Here in LA they would tax you if you sneezed if they could figure out a way. For many years I had a small consulting office (basically 2 people) and we would get the yearly visit from either the City or County looking at the equipment we were using for our business (e.g., copier, fax machine, computer, etc.) and then taxing us for the value of the equipment. This went on year after year even though by the end of our business most of the stuff was 10 to 15 years old! It was basically robbery.

Bertram,

Kudos for the suggestion of the mushroom-headed poly plug hole-fillers, but I believe they would be more attention-grabbing than simply leaving the now nearly-invisible holes alone. Now that the front plate bracket is long gone, my wife is satisfied with the look of her XK8 front end. Why invite additional complaints? And it's one less punch-list item to deal with now....

Stiff upper lip, old chap....

We have that too. I even have to pay annual taxes on my bookcases, and the books in them. It's insanity.

Meanwhile, back on topic, here's something that never occurred to me:

White's prank started 25 years ago when he got a vanity license plate reading, "NO TAGS." He told NBC4 that he was "Just having fun!" and that "D.C. don't get the joke. They don't get it."

The issue? Each time a car without proper identification is cited for a violation, a DMV employee enters "NO TAGS" into their paperwork. Because White's vanity plate is registered with the District of Columbia's DMV, his name and vehicle appear in the computer's system whenever a "NO TAGS" violation is entered. Notices for the fines are then mailed to White's residence.

DC "NO TAGS" man earns $20,000 in fines

I just leave my front plate in the boot (uk)...
Fines the same; no plate or small ilegal size plate, makes no difference here.

So why are you selling them?

Thanks for provoking the thought again, Matt. The answer may turn out to be the tube of black weatherstripping & gasket adhesive I purchased a couple of months ago to re-glue a couple of driver's door weatherstripping pieces on my wife's XK8. I did not have this tube of adhesive when I initially asked the question. Of course, she has not complained about the tiny holes in the front bumper rubber after I removed the front plate way back in February. Sometimes it is better to just leave well enough alone....

Unfortunately we also require front license plates here, but since my car is black, and the front license plates are black with white text, of the small variety, it doesn't look too bad.

I'll try to replace the holder with a slim-edge one too. No free advertisement on my car! Any tips on where I could get a slim black small-size holder?

For most cars, one plate or two doesn't matter. For the Jag (especally MY Jag!!!!!), the front license plate requirement is a killer. Despite the regs, though, I haven't been stopped for it yet...knock on wood! I tried...there isn't a way to make a NJ tag look good on my Jag.

Gad-zooks Bertie! Our boys in blue are colloquially known as 'Rozzers' here in Blighty. Methinks one should dispense with the vulgarities of mere symbols, and just let one's innate character and presence suffice for purposes of recognition. Chin-chin old chum!

I went the zip tie method using the Jag mount. It looks good and you can't see the zip tie's.
