On Board Diagnostics, OBD11 questions
Hi all,
I've been reading with interest the various posts about mechanical services and diagnostics.
It seems that as cars get more complex the technicians become less capable with more instances of vague diagnosis and imperfect repairs being reported on this forum.
Although I've been around cars most of my life the computerised systems of today leave my diagnostic skills inadequate and so I need help!!!!!
Can someone with experience/ expertise give us mere mortals some pointers in the purchase of a suitable diagnostic tool for the XK8?
It seems some require a laptop, others are self-contained, some are generic clones of professional equipment, whilst others simply aren't up to the job.
Many are on Ebay but the novice is easily overwhelmed by the range - and all of them say they are "functional"
With so much experience on this forum some sharply focused advice please.

A good OBD II scanner is the best place to start since from your post it sounds like you have the basic toolset at least. Look on the DIY sticky at the top of the main page. It has a section on the various scanners that work best with our cars.
Handheld models are adequate for most DIY jobs, while the serious mechanics among us (not me) go for the PC-based solutions that offer a wider range of diagnostics and data.
**I see Colin was ahead of me. Good link**
