Default brake lights inop but third brake light works - RESOLVED

Hello,

I have a 2000 xkr coupe and driving to work I was told my main brake lights are out and the third light is the only one that works. I confirmed this. I did a search on this site and it looks like it may be the brake switch, but is the third light affected by this? I just want to fix the problem accuratley. I did not have a rear brake warning failure. I've had other rear light grounding issues in the past, but that has been corrected. Also, I tried look at the wiring diagrams but the work computers block the weblinks. I'm using my phone to post this message.

I appreciate the help! This is my daily driver and New Jersey will pull you over if you have a light that thinks it wants to go out.

I'd expect a failed Brake Switch to kill all the brake lights.

Here's the relevant graphic from the Electrical Guide as a JPG:

If this is unreadable, I can print and scan it for you.

Looks like the "high mounted" light is on a different fuse to the two "normal" lights - top two fuses in the trunk fuse box. Might be worth looking here first.
Cheers,
David.

I also remember reading some threads on tail light grounds, do a search on it and you will find many members had to 'improve' the grounding in this area, I'm not sure if it would affect just brakes or all lights or a mix ? Let us know what you find.

oops, reading too early I see u've visited the grounding issue, maybe just double check anyway

Thank you for the help! I looked at all fuses last night, nothing was blown, but I hope I missed it as it looks like it should be the 5 amp fuse they both share.

Thank you!

Jim,

Thanks for posting again with the explanation.

I've added 'RESOLVED' to your thread title to help others searching for a solution to this issue in future.
