Default Brake Pad Life??

I last changed the brake pads on my '06 XK8 at 22k miles which was in 2009. Clock now shows 105k miles....just checked the pads...still have adequate pad left.

I am going to change them anyways....but what kinds of mileage are you guys getting on brake pads?

Later,

Brake pads will last forever if you never step on the brakes. It has no relationship to mileage.

I was expecting to read you were worried about going through pads too quickly. 83K miles suggests you either only drive uphill or are not using the performance of the vehicle to best advantage.

Why change the pads if you still have plenty of pad material remaining and they are performing well? That's a waste of time and money....

I'd keep them. You might have the record for brake pad life already, but why not run up the score?

Are these special pads, or standard pads?

I like my brake pads to show wear, and the rotors to look as close to new as possible.

That’s the best evidence that the friction material in the pads is doing the best possible job. Pads that never wear out, or are hard on the rotors, are demonstrating poor economy.

A pad that’s so hard it lasts forever is not going to be stopping the car as well as a pad that has the proper composition, and wears as it works.

I went back through my maintenance file and found that I had replaced the front pads at 64k miles...so only 40k miles on them, only the rear ones have the 80k on them...much more believe'able.

Now the comment about not driving to full potential....that is so correct....this is the wife's car...she drives like a little old lady. I seldom drive the XK8.

When I did the brakes in March of 2009, I replaced the rotors as they were so rusted I had to use a hammer to get each one off its spindle, I replaced with drilled rotors. Have resurfaced them once.

Since retirement three years ago, the XK8 is no longer driven to work daily.....driven short distances during the week and then on Sunday gets driven about 80 miles.

No wonder the brake pads are lasting so long huh.....LOL....
