The two most common issues of smells under the hood is leaking valve cover gaskets onto the exhaust manifold and leaking coolant onto the cat converter. Neither leaves a drip on the floor.

Replaced valve cover gaskets have been reported to leak many times usually because of over tightening of the bolts.

About the only rubber smell source is the serpentine belt. It is easily removed to check it's condition and to see if any of the accessories or idler pulleys are binding.

About a week ago I smelled burning rubber. Then I saw smoke coming up from under the hood when I stopped at a stop light. I freaked out. I immediately pulled over to check it out. Turns out it was my fault. I had pulled off the little rubber cap on the top of the shock mount to tighten the bolt as someone had suggested. I forgot to put the cap back on. It fell down between the engine and the frame and got stuck. The heat of the engine melted it.

I have the same exact problem. I recently upgraded my chain tensioners (about 1K miles ago) and now I get a very strong odor of burning rubber when the car is up to temperature. But I have yet to notice any smoke. Glad I am not the only one with this problem. I will bring the car into the shop and see what I can locate in terms of a leak.

My mechanic changed all the seals and the seal by the gear box. I'm not burning oil or fluids nor leaking anywhere. Yet the strong odor of burning rubber floods in the cabin especially when stopped. I guess when driving it is dissipated somewhat. I just paid 3K for all the gaskets to be replaced and the problem is still there. Can someone please help?
If you just paid $3K to have all this work done, the shop should make good on this problem.
