Default Calamity or just dumb?

I am new to this forum, but I have had many Jags over the years. My current garage inhabitant is a 2003 XK8 convertible that I am hoping to have time to work on this summer. I have had the car for a few years, just never had time to actually work out a few of the issues with it before.

I have one of the transmissions that supposedly never required a fluid change. (I think it is a ZF transmission, but I am not certain.) It is the kind with the plastic pan and integrated filter. I have wanted to flush and fill the transmission for a couple of years and finally had time to do it this weekend.

My calamity: I had the car properly supported on jack stands getting ready to drop the transmission pan. However, my floor jack had too much horizontal movement, and caused the rear jacks to slip out from under the car while I was installing the jacks on the front. I quickly dropped the floor jack and I didn't see any fluids under the car. It was getting dark when that happened, so I left the car until this morning. When I got under the car again, I saw that the oil pan now has a pretty big dent in it. The car still runs and I was able to change the oil with the front wheels on ramps.

The dent apparently didn't impact the oil pick up tube, but I don't know how bad this will be for the car. I wasn't able to fully get under the car to inspect everything. It looks like there is reasonable access to the oil pan if I remove the sway bar / cross piece.

My question - Can I drop the oil pan and replace it without pulling the engine out of the car? If the oil pump is working (so far), is there anything I should worry about with a dented oil pan in the 4.2 v8?

Thanks,

Brent Friedman

PS I will try to get a picture and post it - I forgot to do that earlier.

I'n not sure but I believe I could get the pan off my 2005 XK8 without any problems. Might have to remove X brace but not engine.
Put something stable under there also. Don't want to hear about a Jag lover being crushed by a Jag.

It means you have got to up your act and think about safety.... It also means dont ask a question if you cannot take the answer . In the end with a jag you either have the skill to fix it yourself or the wallet to let someone else fix it . If you cannot jack it up safely which category do you fit into ?

You should be able to remove the Oil Pan easily - depending on the damage sustained. Certainly don't need to remove the engine.

So from what I see, your 2003 has the same straight shot to the oil pan as my 1997.
I used a battery powered drill with a Harbor Freight driver and socket to remove the bolts when I did the job for inspection purposes. There are 14 of them if I'm not mistaken, but they only took a few moments to remove with the driver.
I spent a lot more time cleaning out the detritus of past mechanical misadventures (not mine I don't believe).
Be very careful putting the bolts back in. Just saw a Fastenal film which indicates bolts get over-torqued when they have a bit of lubricant on them, and your oil pan bolts will be pre-lubed.
I don't remember the listed torque value, but if you use your driver, start at about (I'm spit ballin' here) half the listed amount. Then check for snugness, very carefully with a quarter inch hand held driver. My two cents. I didn't break any bolts and my oil pan doesn't drip, so I figure that I done good and done right.
Oh, and I'll say more politely, but with the same conviction as our other commenter, please be careful jacking up your car.
