Default Cam Cover Bolt Torque

After reading many posts that include Cam Cover Bolt Torque, I am somewhat mystified at the "Difficulty" of getting the proper tightening of the bolts.

After installing new Secondary Tensioners in my car, I noted the following:

The gasket should fit "behind" the slight "skirt" on the end of each metal bolt spacer. This will result in a metal to metal contact between the bottom of the spacer and the head surface when the cover is installed. Since the gasket material surrounds the "skirt" there will be no leak there.

When I tightened the bolts, it was OBVIOUS when the correct torque was reached. The torque went from very low to very high in a small fraction of a turn.

I was impressed with the design of the Metal Spacer system that (in my opinion) would prevent over tightening.

Paul
I agree with you, I've had mine off several times and never replaced the gasket and have not had any leaks. I will probably replace them the next time. just to feel safe.

Paul.... I am mystified too. The leaks seem to be related to something other than the bold torque. Please read my other post, down the page about leaking covers. As I said in the other post, it's embarrasing to not be able to stop a simple oil leak. There are thousands of cars that don't leak. Please just pat me on the head, and tell me "its okay" and "try again".
