Anybody have any experience using an aftermarket fuel pump made by Airtex, part# E2226. I see this on e-bay selling for $40. If I can save $400 my wife will be very happy!

It was about 131.00 for the pump and another 20.00 for the screen filter.Based on the work and effort to get the tank out and replace the pumps,I would invest in a better pump than one on ebay.There is also Ken at Motorcars Ltd,which supports this forum.

 

One more thing on the fuel pump. The Proper number for your car is
AIRTEX Part # E2471 if you want to install a service grade ,the going price for that pump is around $80.00 or you can go to a OEM grade for $130.00-$150 per pump,screens are about the same for either types.So if it were me and I was going to keep the car for a couple of years and did 4 to 6 hours of labor,I would go with the OEM grade.The dealer will charge you a min of $1300.00 to do the job.So tell you wife you saved almost a $1000.00(the fuel line release tool will be less then $10.00)and buy the better pumps.Your
call.

 

I suggest that you check the fuses and relays for the fuel pumps. It would be unusual for both to fail at once and the car should start on one. There are two and if it's set up like the XJR, the second pump starts at 4000 engine rpm. If these things are good, check the pump harnesses as there have been problems with these. Fuel pumps should last 100,000 miles unless the car tank is always below 1/4 and the pumps are always in the open without the fuel to keep them cool.

 

Just to comment on the advice of check the fuse,if the fuse did blow it is most likely because the harness to the pumps has shorted.Guess what,you have to remove the tank to get at it,and if I am that far into the tank,I would replace the pumps.Pumps are motors and are working whenever the engine is running.A relay is less likely to fail, it has a coil that holds the contacts when energized and goes from one cycle (on-off)everytime you run the engine.As far as the subject of running the gas level below a 1/4 of a tank is a bit of a myth.The gas going through the pump really is what will cool the pump.

Update on my origianl post: The CAT IS ALIVE AGAIN!

I replaced both fuel pumps and filter screens (Parts Geek $305) and it fired right up! It is now running great, and it seems to have better response (maybe I was ruinning on one pump for awhile!) Not an easy job but not too bad once you get the lines disconnected underneath! Thanks to everyone for the advice and info.

I felt your pain,been there done that.Glad to see you went with the pumps from Partgeeks, its too much labor to risk low end parts.Wasn't it fun getting the fuel lines off!!Good to see you are back on the road.
