Default CD player suddenly dead...

...We are planning a trip this coming week in the Jag. I know a dead CD player is not the most tragic thing in the world, but why now?
It was working just fine, then I tried to show my wife how great the sound system is. When I pushed the CD selection it came back with "ER". I went to the trunk and tried to eject the cartridge and the unit seems dead, as in no power.
Does anyone have an idea where to start on this. I am hoping for a quick fix, no time to tear up the car again.

Default Do You Have An iPod or iPhone?

Here's where I'd go ...

Amazon.com: iDeck Integrated Car Cassette Adapter for iPod: MP3 Players & Accessories

I use this myself and just love it. Although my CD player does work (at least the last time I tried it about a year ago), you have a much larger selection of music with this method. You can get this delivered pretty quick ...

The CD cartridge will eventually come out if you give it some "gentle" persuasion. Once it has ejected, shove it back in, it will in most cases start working again. It has happened to me (as well as many other forum members) on numerous occasions, and each time it has responded normally.

Anyone know of a UK source for this?

Our UK Customs Inspection Fee would double the cost from the US.

Tberg, I wish I could buy you a beer. You may have saved my weekend with my wife. She does not understand why I keep messing with a car that exhibits so many issues. She drives a Ford Edge, and it always works as expected.
I would not have tried, so aggressively, the removal of the cassette without your suggestion. It took a lot of force with a small screwdriver to get it out. Then, all of a sudden it just started working again. If only my other issues were that easy.
Thank you, thank you... I will think of you as we travel to the coast this weekend.

Hey Lanny,
I'm so glad it starting working for you. It has probably happened to me 3 or 4 times in the 3 years I've owned the car, and each time when I've ejected and then re-inserted again it's worked. It's not scientific, but strictly from experience. Have a great music filled weekend.

None of that Rube Goldberg malarkey... get this and stream Internet radio! It's 2013! They have 3.5mm minijack adaptors for any smartphone/MP3 player. It's wonderful with my iPhone 5.

Does lubricating these 6-CD cartridges on a regular basis keep this problem from occuring? If so, exactly where should the lubricant be applied?

As we were traveling down the road yesterday, enjoying the warm weather and listening to a local station, the sound suddenly stopped. I told my wife that this particular station broadcasts live and it is not unusual for them to have dead air time. But after a few minutes I told her to just pick another station. She did and still silence. So I tried the CD player, nothing. I was about to give up and decide that the radio had indeed died, then I noticed the volume read zero. We did not touch that radio, it had turned itself off essentially. Turning the volume up fixed it. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Lanny,
I had all of the preset stations disappear once, and because I didn't know it had happened, I had no sound no matter how loud I turned the volume. I don't know what prompted me to try resetting the stations, but once I did that I had no problems (ever since). Did you have a nice weekend away?

Thanks for asking Tberg. Yes, we are enjoying our time at Fort Bragg. The Jag however is not as happy. The display is showing,"asc not available",trac not available",top not latched", and a new one,"check rear lights". As near as i can tell the rear lights are working fine. Today we are headed home, about 200 miles. As long as it doesn't get any worse than this I will consider it a successful first trip. At least the radio is still working OK.

"Check rear lights" in addition to "Cruise not available" usually means that your brake pedal switch is failing. Does your cruise control work normally?

And as mentioned above, check your battery cells and top them up as necessary....

No problem with the cruise control. I used it a lot. I will check the brake switch. The battery seems OK. It always starts right up and shows around 13.8 volts while running.
