Default Cellphone static?

No built in bluetooth.

When calling out on cellphone there is a ton of static/ticking on the line.

Is there a fix? I assume it is the ignition system that is causing the problem. New spark plug, coil, starter cables the answer?

Anyone have this problem? A fix? Thanks

Are you plugged in on a charger or completely wireless?

Does the noise change with how fast the engine runs?

I'd say your muffler bearing is shot.

Advance auto parts has the cheapest ones.

You should call them quickly before stock runs out, it can take months before they get more in.

Now now.

If it's plugged in like WhiteXKR thought, that's the problem. I had a similar issue with my iPhone lightning cable. I slapped a ferrite core clasp thingy around it and that fixed it. Line noise isolator basically. You can probably find one on an old phone cord, or at Radio Shack. I can't remember where mine came from as it was in my 'treasure drawer' but I've seen them at electronics parts shops.

Why would you need your cell phone if your Jag is still running?
On my wife's car the static you described was caused by cracked insulation on the coil lead.

I am not pluged into anything complete wireless. I don't know about the different speeds as my passenger only checked when on the highway.

Pitifulpluto; A muffler bearing? How is that going to effect a wirless transmission? And what where is it?

I'll check for cracks on coil. That's where I am thinking the problem is coming from, but still looking.

I'm on the third Jag, 2004 XJ8, 2001 XK8 and 2008 XJR, all have/had the ticking noise.

Linked my phone to the Blue Tooth in the XJR, no ticking. I just live with it in the XK8. The XJ8 is gone.

I try to stay off the phone while driving anyway.

I do as well, but those pesky passengers do.

These cars have eight separate coils. If the insulation is damaged, chances are you would have a misfire detected.

I would suggest checking for a loose spark plug.

If that is not the problem, there is an unproven theory that the three ultrasonic transducers used for passenger detection for the safety systems in the XK8 cause interference on some phones, especially from the passenger seat. I think this has some credibility. Installing a Bluetooth system is one way to resolve this.

Btw, old guys, phones aren't used as phones any longer.

I don't talk when I'm driving unless I have to- I use mine to stream Pandora internet radio through an input adaptor on my stock radio. Original look without a tacky aftermarket radio, modern content, great quality sound. (search 'aux-in' on this forum for more info)
